Shadows Dreamers
By: minzypops
I felt my heart pounding hard against my chest, my breath coming out in short gasps for air. My legs felt around, skin
touching a prickly texture. Grass, I immediately thought. Cold drops of sweat dripped down my face, as I tried to wipe it off. My
skin seized up as a quick blast of air shook me. I know this place, I thought, I've been here before. My chest contracted, fear
gripping every part of my body, shaking me. As I anticipated another shock of air, for a bleeting moment, something black raced
before me, into the forest. I urged myself to move, my sixth sense screaming at me. But my legs felt a weight of a ton, my
frustration growing. Goddammit!, I screamed internally, Why can't a fucking move?!
Paralyzed, much to my distaste, the nightly figure loomed in the distance. My mind blacked out for a split second. I lay my sore head back onto the grass, breathing deeply, trying to calm my racing mind. My vision came back to me in tiny spurts, like static.
I tried to lift my head back up, my vision still blurry and dizzying. I opened my mouth to scream, but my voice seemed to swell
up instead and disapparate. My eyes welled up with tears as I lay there gaping, so vulnerable to the looming figure before me.
In a swift motion, its face grew impossibly close to mine. Its breath was repulsive, it reeked of metal and something rancid.
Millimeters from me, I could see into its eyes, a manic desire, and the squid like tentacles that came squirting out of its mouth.
God help me, I thought. I cringed down into a ball, into a fetal position, softly praying.
As I waited for death to come, I heard something in the distance, a soft whisper rapidly turning into a scream, the voice filling up my ears and making my head swim.
Fantasy became reality as I awakened to the sound of screaming. I jumped out of my bed, sprinting while desperately trying to
clean the sweat from my forehead. I ran, following the source of the sound, checking my heartbeat on my neck, to make sure I
was alive. Just another stupid dream, I scolded silently. The ongoing scream broke into a loud wailing. I flew down the stairs,
pulling up my brown hair, in my eyes, into a quick bun . My mother was hunched over the kitchen table, in my sister's arms. My mother, seeming
to sense me, looked up,
her hair a mess as well as her dripping mascara on her face. "They got him," she managed to choke out. My mind
raced, Wait. What? "Got who?" I asked hurriedly, before my mother could burst into another sob. "MOM!" I yelled, my
impatience getting to me. I wasn't about to stand here all day while she cried her eys out. "Who did they get?" And who was "they?" "The shadows," my mother whispered slowly, her hands wrenching, "The shadows took your father." She broke out into another scream, even louder than the first. What? Wha-? They got who-? My father? Dad? Da-? All of a sudden the lights seemed too bright, and I rubbed my face repeatedly with my hands, trying to get a sense of what was occuring around me. Everything seemed to fade out as the lights went out and all my senses stopped. Only one thought, one question, remained on my mind.
How the hell did they get out of my head?
