Epic Fail

With any project there is at least one epic fail. Its a law of costuming or something. I had my epic fail this weekend with my blue wool dress. This dress is hand sewn and documented for an Arts & Science project so there have already been countless man hours put into it. It also needs to be done for this coming Saturday since thats when Montengarde's Twelfth Night is holding the competition. I had put on, picked off, put on again the hooks and eye closures along the front of the dress at least three times over last week. I finally got all 20ish hooks and eyes sewn on (using the fancy zipper method where you whipstitch the opening closed then sew the hooks and eyes down. That SHOULD make the closure even and prevent gaping.).

Late Saturday night, while cat_cetera was still over, I tried it on. At that point, all I had left to do was the guards on the bottom of the sleeves and the guard along the bottom of the skirt. Low and behold it gapped. And not a little bit either, it evenly gapped from top to bottom. The hooks and eyes were also making a pucker along the edge of the closure. I dont know if that is because the dress is a little too small for me (which I wonder about since it fits FANTASTICALLY except for the closures. And its not like its an inch gap, its maybe 1/8" gap)or if it will be fixed with a replacement of the hooks and eyes. I had two options, we could either sew me into it for photos then not wear the dress for the judging, or I can could use make some adjustments which worked WONDERS for Gemma's dress. I decided on the longer, harder option cause I REALLY REALLY want to wear this dress for Twelfth Night. I pulled all the trim off bodice of the dress and all 20 some hooks and eyes. I then cut a new piece of trim which will fold OVER the edge of the dress and be sewn down to the lining. I dont really have documentation for that, but with no extant garments from this time, I think I can make a case for it with artwork. This method will make for a more sturdy base for the hooks and eyes to sew on to and it will give a bit more width close the gapping. The biggest problem with this is that it is setting me back about 6 hours of work....Grrr

As of 11pm last night, I had 2/3's of the trim sewn back on. The hooks and eyes will be tonight, and hopefully the hemline will be evened out so I can put the bottom guard on. That will leave the actual sewing of the guards (hemline and wrists) for Wednesday night. And here I thought I had stared this in plenty of time to be all done by the week before the event!!! Next time I set out a deadline schedule and stick to it.

On a better note, the documentation for the Blackwork is completed and just needs to be printed. I still have to put the documentation for the dress together, which will be much harder!

Oh! Can you enter a piece into Kingdom A&S for input that has been entered in another A&S competition?
