I was sitting on the front porch stairs watching the hummingbirds yesterday evening. Its funny how something roughly half the size of my thumb can show individual personality traits. There were at least 4 coming back and forth from the feeder. One of them was very territorial and would run the others off. Another was very vocal chirping happily the whole way to the feeder and while eating. A third was very very cautious. It saw me sitting in the shadow and flew towards me hovering about 5 feet away staring at me for a several seconds before approaching the feeder. Such wonderful little jewels of creation.
It made me think of the talk in the DC in the symposium about the unseen things. I was blown away there was a whole segment dedicated to our improved relationship with animals. As an animal lover I have been made to feel a little guilty about how much I care for them many people really don’t seem to appreciate that even something as insignificant as a chicken (ask me about it) has a personality that joy can be derived from!!
On a side note my garden is coming along nicely. I believe I am going to plant creeping thyme as a ground cover. It has a lovely texture and is very aromatic. I need to get some garden furniture so I can sit out there and enjoy it better!
