Round 0, Entry 01: Saltwater Rolls

Dec 18, 2008 02:39

Hmm... I have to admit, I didn't expect to receive an entry at this time of night. Very well. I will now commence judging contestant #01, I-Pin, and her Saltwater Rolls.

It appears to be a classic dinner roll, resembling a French boule. The crust is firm and well-textured, but it seems a bit too hard. I'm almost disappointed. But what is this rich and nutty aroma? It seems familiar, but there's something unusual...

I suppose I'll have to eat it to find out. Here I go.

Wh-what is this feeling? I... Am I floating? Could it be? This is...

THE OCEAAAAN!!!!!

What a beautiful sea! But it's freezing down here, and the water pressure is unbearable. This... probably isn't healthy. I can't breathe, for one thing! But what's this? There's something approaching from the distance. Is it a torpedo? A... a submarine? That's... spinning?

NO!! That's not it! Its top hatch is opening, and now it's rolling towards me so that I can get in!! That's it!!! It's a submarine that's ROLLing through the SALTWATER!

Yes, I understand it now! For your crust, you used acorn flour: coarsely ground, black oak acorn flour!! Not as sweet as the white oak variety, the flour you chose complements the sea salt perfectly! Not only does it seal the moisture inside, allowing for a fluffier interior, it also lets the bread stay fresh longer, a vital consideration for those long sea voyages!! Eating this bread gives the impression of being inside a cozy submarine, protected from the elements by a hard shell!!! It evokes a feeling of fortitude and endurance, necessary for the toil-filled life of any sailor!!

This is... truly bread that represents the ocean.

The only thing I would deduct points for is its texture. Sadly, this bread has the air of a wonderful idea that wasn't allowed to reach perfection. Experimenting with the proportions of water and flour would have allowed for a crisper crust and a softer interior. If it was me, I would've added some white flour and more water into the mix.

So, I'll give this bread a minus three! With seven points left, you pass into the next round!

RESULT: -3
7pts remaining

Now... how do I get out of this submarine? I can't swim.

btw minus zero is the highest it gets, bread reactions, ooc: please excuse the fail, it's a bake-off
