Decemeber 25th …

It was a horrid mishmash of red, green and white. Angry looking snowmen lined the sleeves, while reindeer- or where those possibly moose? - pranced along the center, bordered by lopsided snowflakes, and in between those …

Pompoms.

Lots and lots of pompoms.

Teddy blinked at the hideous sweater, slowly looking up at the weathered old face of Billy’s smiling grandmother, beaming with pride at her creation.

“Do you like it? I was in such a rush! The tsviling called me so late!! They said to me, ‘Bubbe! Bubbe! We need your help! We’re a having a big surprise Christmas for Teddy, and we need you to make a sweater so we can put it under the tree!’”

Teddy’s gaze twitched to Aaron and Jake, puffing their chests out proudly, grinning so wide Teddy was sure their faces would split.

“And I thought, Oi vey! You tell me this so late! I’ve never even made a Christmas sweater!”

Teddy could tell.

“But I managed! And here it is, does it fit? What are you waiting for? Try it on!! Let me see you- here, I’ll help you-”

Teddy had no choice but to let the old woman tuck the sweater over his head, though he managed to pull his arms through the sleeves before she insisted on helping him there too. She smoothed it down for him.

“Ah!! Perfect fit!!”

Teddy had shifted so that it would be.

“You see how good your Bubbe is!” she laughed as she shook a gnarled finger at Billy and the twins, before turning back to Teddy, hands clasped and expression hopeful, “Well?”

Teddy stared down at the knitted atrocity. He thought about old arthritic hands knitting tirelessly on short notice to make him something he didn’t need- and would never ever wear- so that he’d have a gift to open on Christmas morning.

Teddy smiled, little dimples creasing his cheeks, “Thanks Mrs-”

“Ah! Ah! Ah!” the old woman shook a finger at his nose, “What did I say about calling me that?”

Teddy laughed, and hugged her close, “Thank you Bubbe Sue. Thank you so much.”

Over her shoulder he watched Aaron and Jake high each other, while Billy gave him a smile that was cross between thankful for his handling of their sensitive grandmother, and apologetic for her senile eccentricities.

“My but you look great, Ted. Best sweater I’ve ever seen,” Tommy grinned, pure mockery in his eyes, clearing his throat so as not to laugh.

“Doesn’t he just? It’s perfect, isn’t it?” Bubbe Sue positively beamed. “I was so happy with it when I finished, I said to myself, Bubbe! The other boys will be jealous, you have no choice! You must make one for everybody!”

Tommy choked. Billy squeaked. Jake and Aaron gaped. And Teddy was hard pressed to hold back his laughter.

“Come here, Tommy- Let’s try yours on first!”
