Summary: (Caleb/Alyssa) Caleb can be such a hog-head sometimes, but that's when Alyssa steps in and straightens him out.
Notes: This occurs before the time skip. Caleb is ten and Alyssa is eight in this ficlet.
Alyssa puckered her little lips and slapped Caleb's hand away from the sundae. Placing her hands onto her hips, she scolded him, "You're supposed to eat it with a spoon, silly! Not your hands!"
Caleb grumbled something under his breath and reached across the table for a spoon. Flopping back into his chair, he stared up at the giant pile of ice cream and sighed, saliva dripping from his tiny fangs. He didn't bother waiting for his companion to sit down, and scooped a large hunk of whipped cream into his gaping mouth. As he went for a second spoonful, Alyssa landed another stinging smack onto his wrist.
"What's the big idea? Cut that out!" he roared, dropping his spoon and snatching hers out of reach. Running around the table, he taunted the poor girl by dangling her spoon in the air just above her head. Tears sprang from Alyssa's eyes as she jumped up, endeavoring to retrieve her utensil. When that failed, she stomped her feet into the carpet and warned her tormentor,
"You'll be sorry if you don't give it back!"
The older child rolled his dark eyes and dropped the spoon into her open hands. He added with a grunt, "Chill out, I was only messing with you, okay? Just stop smacking me all the time..."
"But you were going to eat all of the whipped topping! That's the best part..." Alyssa murmured and returned to her chair. Caleb sat beside her, feeling rotten for bullying her so. She was the only girl with a record for getting under his skin, for slipping past that snarky exterior he fronted to the rest of the civilized world. And he wouldn't be able to enjoy another bite of his afternoon snack until she smiled again.
A round, bright cherry enthroned by a sea of luscious cream caught his eye suddenly. That was the best part of any sundae. Perhaps a selfless act would suffice as an apology. Plucking the tart fruit away from its perch, Caleb offered it to his younger friend with an indignant squeak, "Here, you can have it."
"R-really?" The girl asked, a smile hinting at her lips.
Narrowing his eyes, Caleb popped the cherry into Alyssa's open mouth and continued with the rest of his dessert. Instead of going straight for the cream, he dug into the bottom of the glass dish and scraped up some ice cream. Even though she was annoying, Alyssa was the only friend he ever had. He was more than willing to put up with her etiquette lessons and princess-like behavior.
"Thank you." she whispered into his ear and pecked his cheek. She giggled at his reaction; choking on his ice cream, he threw his spoon down a second time and turned away from her. His face was scarlet with embarrassment as he struggled to retain his composure.
He glanced over his shoulder and mumbled, "Girls..."
