dearest stots, you may not agree with me in some points, but give this some thought. ultimately it is you who will decide the course of your own life.
sometimes, you have to go to where you don't want to go in order to find out where you really want to go.
my mom recently told me that before i can say "this is not for me," i have to try it out and do my best in that field... because if you think about it, saying that "this isn't for me" without any exposure and immersion to the given field whatsoever is simplistically stupid and philosophically quitting. you only say that "this is not for me" when you've contributed to something and you realize that you're not happy. like how one says, "i'm not meant to be a banker" after N years in the banking industry, "i want to be a doctor instead." -- that's worth saying that because there's effort and immersion in a certain field. some are lucky enough to know what's really for them, but for those who don't, we should always keep an open mind.
right now, i think it's not a matter of satisfying your own desires anymore, because you already did that in college. if there's anything now that you're trying to find yourself it's supposed to be the openess and willingness to learn any new thing. try to immerse yourself in your family business, not because you want to manage it, but because you want to learn more about the world. because you want people to know that they can't mess with you business-wise. because you treasure that legacy your parents built and worked hard for, just for you. who knows eventually after they see you holding the family business, they will give you the opportunity to start your own. maybe that's what they're just waiting for. managing your father's business is like a test to the ones you plan to have. it doesn't mean naman that your father's business will forever be your business. businesses shift, like how nokia started out as a stationery-paper company but it has evolved to be one of the biggest telecommunications-supplier supplier today.
if you simply don't want to start with your father's company, then work. work in another company to learn the tricks of the trade. do well and succeed. let your surfing and travelling dreams inspire you in achieving what you ought to achieve in your work. once you're working and earning your own money, you can travel and do whatever you like. but everything in this world is earned... you can't be dreaming forever. diba?
it's not a betrayal to oneself to do something you do not like to do, it's a betryal to oneself if you don't use your most wonderful opportunities and share your blessings. your essence relies on your work: what you do, and what you have done. when you find your essence, that's when you will truly be happy.
i love you stots. i'm not making paggalit to you or anything. you're probably tired of hearing people contradict your points of view, but you know how i'm always frank because i care, just two cents from a friend for a friend. *hugs*
work in my company. totally new experience. unlike any other. you might like it here. don't forget to wear business attire on your interview. :)
