It started out peacefully enough. They were holed up in Theo’s room studying for their math midterm, even though Jake’s idea of studying was studying the spokesmodels that came on screen as he channel surfed while Theo attempted to get at least some information through his friend’s thick skull.

“So to find the cosine of a… Jake, are you even listening to me!?”

“Dude, you’ve gotta see the girl on the new Wendy’s commercial,” Jake said through clicks. “She’s like a really hot version of Mandy Moore. Not that Mandy isn’t already hot but…”

“Jake!”

He sighed. “Cosine, yeah, sounds thrilling. Can we take a break?”

“You just had one.”

“Well, math makes my brain hurt.”

“So does thinking, apparently.” Theo shot back before taking in Jake’s defeated expression and sighing. “Yeah, okay, I’ve gotta call Felicia anyway.”

Jake groaned. “Oh Jesus, can I be elsewhere for this little exchange? Hearing you two start with the baby talk kinda makes my Doritos come back up.”

Theo turned around, his eyes widening. “You’re unbelievable, you know that, Jake? Do you just say everything that stomps through your brain?”

“Yeah, basically,” he replied, stretching. “But what are best friends for, right?”

“I thought they were supposed to be happy for you but I guess I was wrong,” Theo answered, reaching for his phone.

Jake raised an eyebrow. “What’s that’s supposed to mean? I’m happy for you and Felicia!”

Theo laughed, but it was a bitter, dry laugh that Jake had never heard before and really didn’t like. “That is such a load of crap.”

“What, I am. She’s a total bitch, but I’m glad you find that quality endearing, Theo,” Jake said, only half-joking.

“Don’t talk about her like that!”

“Why not!? She’s…god, she’s nothing but a whore who wants to go out with you for some strange reason.”

Theo bit his lip, looking down at the floor and Jake inwardly cringed for saying the wrong thing. “Theo, I didn’t mean it like that! I meant you’re too good for-”

“I don’t think you should be calling anyone a whore, Jake. You know what they say about people in glass houses.”

“What does that even mean?”

“Oh, god I‘m sorry Jake,” Theo said, his voice dripping with false sympathy. “I forgot who I was talking to, I’ll talk slower and lay off the metaphors.”

Theo’s eyes were narrowed, focused on Jake’s but there was no playful sparkle, no sign that this was just a game. They were cold and Theo was never cold to anyone, and certainly not to Jake.

They had fought before, but Jake knew this was a different one, a big one. One that had been brewing for months and it was too late to hold anything back now.

“Dude, I just meant-”

“Shut up! I have had to listen to every last one of your little tantrums on Felicia and I’m not going to this time. You’re gonna listen to me for once. I am sick and tired of hearing you tear down my relationship when you’ve never even had one of your own. What the hell am I supposed to do, Jake!? Die alone and miserable while you screw your way through the entire female population of North America?! Look, I know you’re miserable but-”

“I am not miserable!”

“Save it for someone who doesn’t know you, Jake, and trust me, I do. Even this fucked up James Dean version of you who thinks he’s god’s freaking gift. And you know what else I know?”

“What!?” Jake snapped, throwing up his hands. “Fill me in since you know everything now.”

“You’re not taking me down with you, that’s what you want, isn’t it? I choose to be happy.”

“With her!?”

“Maybe, yeah,” Theo said defiantly. “And even if I do, it’s none of your business.”

Jake’s mouth dropped open and he stood there stunned, words failing him for once. “Wow, just…I never thought I’d hear you say that, Theo.”

“Why not!? You say it to me all the time!”

“Yeah, but-”

“Don’t worry, you won’t hear it anymore. I’m done with worrying about you and your fucked up love life, if you even wanna call it that. You might wanna do the same for me.”

Jake bit his lip, sliding his backpack on before saying softly. “God, you really are a Spidey fan.”

“What does that have to do with anything!?” Theo asked incredulously.

“Two best friends, torn apart because of a girl, you might wanna think about that, man.”

They shared one last look, and for a split second Theo swore he saw tears reflected in the brown eyes staring back at him, but that couldn’t be right. Jake never cried.

But Theo did the second he slammed the door behind him, and didn’t come rushing right back in to tell him it was all just a joke.
