The four of them knew that there were things about that first summer that they just didn’t talk about.
Lena knew that Bee and Tibby had probably gotten the worst of it, not that she would have ever admit that to Carmen. It wasn’t that their problems had been small, she knew that they had seemed huge at the time, but it was like Bridget and Tibby were different people. The only difference was that Tibby wasn’t hiding behind a haphazardly applied bottle of Ash Brown number seven.
Maybe that was why she was studying her with narrowed eyes as she applied a fresh coat of Carmen’s turquoise nail polish to her toes, looking for some sort of visible bruise instead of all the deep down ones that Bailey’s death had left behind.
“Why are you staring at me like that?” Tibby asked, tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear.
“No reason,” Lena said quickly. “Are you gonna paint your fingers to match?” she asked, letting her alcohol soaked cotton ball hover the badly chipped black paint on Tibby‘s thumb.
“No!” she snapped, yanking her hand away.
“Geez, Tibby. I was just… they’re practically faded away by now. It won’t take long.”
“I’m not taking it off,” she said firmly.
“Why not?”
“Because I don’t want to?”
“Oookay…”
“Because Bailey painted them before she…” Tibby trailed off. “I just this like this color a lot, okay!?”
Lena nodded slowly, biting her lip as a teardrop slid down Tibby’s cheek. From now on she’d be more careful about what she wished for.
