After spending the better part of the day avoiding Alex, Dean had come to one conclusion: he couldn’t.

Sure, he could avoid the actual Alex fast enough, all it had taken was a quick hop behind a pillar in the lobby to throw him off that morning. Of course, a group of cheerleaders huddled around the coffee stand had looked at him like he had sprouted a second head, but it was worth it just to avoid another talk about the awkwardness that Alex had walked in on the night before.

He could avoid Alex for as long as he needed to, but Alex’s ghost, and all the memories he had stored away over the years were kind of impossible to forget. And this place really wasn’t helping. There was the pizza place, which they both agreed skimped on the cheese, but had some pretty decent half mushroom half pepperoni pizza.

The dorm where they had spent every semester together since Alex had convinced him that college just might be a better idea than spending his post high school years getting stoned on his dad’s couch was definitely not an option, even though he knew he’d eventually have to go back to pick up the mountain of math homework he probably would probably bullshit his way through anyway.

So he was here, in his old room, where images of the two of them running around with towels tied around their shoulders pretending to be the very fucked up combination of Wolverine and Superman were bound to come back at any moment, but home was where the heart is, right?

Or some shit to that effect that his grandmamma had embroidered on a pillow.

It had occurred to Dean that this was probably the first place Alex would look for him, but there was nothing quite like the room you grew up in.

“I really made a mess, Zeus,” he whispered into a fuzzy brown ear as if that will help. “I didn’t mean to. I never meant to fall for either of them, and not it’s all just a big mess.”

Zeus just stared at him with his black button eyes, just like always. Dean really couldn’t expect much from him, he was more of a listener anyway. He sat him up on his usual perch on the windowsill, before resting his head against the wall, eyes threatening to close as an all too familiar appeared in the doorway.

“Knew I’d find you here,” Alex said, walking over to him. Dean had the sneaking suspicion he was just a tiny bit drunk. It seemed he wasn’t the only one nervous about this little encounter.

“Yeah, knew you would too,” he sighed.

“Hope’s been avoiding me too.”

“Well gee, wonder why?” He snorted, looking over at him. “Shouldn’t you be off with your Maxim model?”

“First of all, Marina’s been in one issue and…why is she any of your business!?”

“You’re right, she’s not! Just like what Hope and I do isn’t any of yours! You had no right to barge in and say those things last night!”

“Excuse the fuck out of me if I expected my best friend to keep his hands off of my girlfriend while I was gone!”

“Your ex girlfriend! You left her like you left me!”

“You act like we were dating or something!”

“Oh, I forgot, we were only best friends, right? How silly of me.”

Alex took a step closer. “Dean, you know it’s not like that,” he said softly.

“Then what was it like? Was it all oh, I’ll just ditch Dean, and Hope. I’ll give them a second for it all to sink in first, because, you know, that way I’ll still be a nice guy.”

“You know I wouldn’t do that,” he said soothingly, sitting on the edge of the bed. “I missed you, Dean, you know that.”

Dean laughed dryly. “Oh, really. You know I’m having a hard time believing that when you…”

Alex cut him off with a kiss, words failing him, so his tongue and lips did all the talking for him. He tried to show him how much he missed him, missed Hope, spent long hours in the hot tub wondering what both of them were doing, and how he would spend countless more thinking about what he knew they were doing now. He was jealous, but he wasn’t quite sure who it was geared toward.

Dean pulled away, eyes slightly darkened, but he looked less than happy with him. “What the fuck are you doing, man?”

“I’m sorry,” Alex whispered. “You have no idea how sorry I am, Dean.”

“You’re just gonna have to show me.”

And he did, his lips meet his a second time, not leaving them until he felt dizzy. Even though if he wasn’t sure if it was from his heart going into overdrive, or the fact that oxygen was becoming a serious necessity.

Dean moaned softly as Alex started kissing his jaw, watching him with half lidded eyes and sliding his fingers into his hair. Alex’s kisses moved lower, down the curve of his neck and throat, before the reality of the situation finally set in.

Alex wanted him. This could go far, as far as he wanted, as Alex wanted and no one would ever know. It was all falling into place, after years of wanting it, even though he would never admit it to anyone, not even himself. So why did it feel so wrong?

Alex’s fingers were making quick work of the top few buttons of his shirt as he sat up, nearly knocking Alex off the bed in the process. “Alex, I… can’t.”

“What do you mean?”

“I can’t. She still loves you, and you love her and… I love… I’m too confused for this to be anything right now.”

He left Alex sitting on the bed, hopping into the car and running every red light on the way to the dorms. There wasn’t anyone chasing him, unless you count those ghosts of Alex that seemed to follow him everywhere. They would probably be even worse now.

He sighed, tossing his keys onto the table as he shut the door to his room.

“Something happen?” Hope asked, looking up from her chemistry textbook.

“Nothing important,” he said softly, kissing her and hoping she wouldn‘t notice the faint taste of Alex left behind. “Let’s just get some sleep.”
