It's raining in New York City. It's not just a downpour that speckles your hair or beads up on your brand new shoes. It's something much worse; the kind of rain that invades your senses, making your eyelids and limbs heavy and your thoughts clouded. She supposes the rain is to blame for all of it, every missed cue and line flub, every last note out of tune, but deep down she knows the weather isn't the reason she's out of sorts.
She digs her phone out of a beaded tote bag that Emily swore made her look like a gypsy. Little did she know that she took it as a compliment. The answering service picks up after five agonizing rings, but she's determined to wait through twenty if she has to. The message doesn't matter, it changes weekly. It's always something equally silly and ridiculous, telling you about how his pants have split or that Jensen has herpes, but it's that laugh that's her undoing. The distance is far, and that combined with this stupid rain should only add to her bad mood, but she does something unexpected.
Zooey smiles.
She should have known it's always sunny in Vancouver.
