They’re completely different.

Sam has her long brown hair, exotic looks and curves in all the right places. Morgan’s hair is kept in a messy bob, her skin pale thanks to her fair mother and dislike of anything outdoorsy, especially if it involves stepping away from her laptop. She’s beautiful in her own way, almost pixyish, like a waifish runway model, a petite little actress who tries to hide behind bug-eyed sunglasses.

She’d hate both of those comparisons of course, which is why Aaron’s never really said them out loud.

Morgan is cold, to people other than him anyway. He supposes there’s a reason why she’s so closed off, but he really has no idea, and Aaron definitely has no idea why she chose to open up to him.

Sam inherited her mother’s sunny disposition. She could start a conversation with anyoneabout anything, but like her father she understood when to take pauses and listen. Her intense gaze was a perfect match of his, despite the fact that her eyes were another gift from her mother.

A sharp tongue is probably the one thing the two of them have in common. Morgan and Sam both have the ability to cut his legs out from under him with a simple remark, or to make him forget said remark with a sweet smile or a flutter of their eyelashes.

They’re both amazing. They’re both someone he could be with circumstances were different, or even stayed the same, but there are rules.

"You only get one soul mate," Sam had whispered knowingly one chilly September night at the wise old age of eight. "Or at least that’s what my mom says. She says there is one person out there for everyone, even if the wrong people look like they could be yours along the way. You can even do something to hurt yours, or even be separated from them, but if they’re really your soul mate it doesn’t matter."

He remembers being confused. He was pretty sure he had looked at her like she was crazy. "Why would you want to be around someone who hurts you?" he asked incredulously.

"They‘re home," Sam said simply like it was the only thing in this world she knew to be true, as simple as two plus two. "When you’ve found your soul mate, you’ve found your home, and that’s a very hard thing to find."

"How do you know all this stuff?"

"My mom," she wrinkled her nose. "She says the craziest stuff sometimes."

Aaron’s been replaying that conversation over and over for the past few days. He’s already chosen, he chose Sam a long time ago, maybe even on that night, even though he had known nothing about love except what Charlie and his mother had shown him.

Now he knows better, love was beautiful; why else would it hurt so much to lose it? Soul mates were home; a second part of yourself that you could lose yourself in, moment by moment.

He just hopes Sam still believes in taking soul mates back, no matter what they had done in the past.
