Fanmix:Set Against The Sky (Lee and Kara)

Oct 16, 2009 00:53

So, I've been meaning to post this fanmix for these two for awhile, but since I've been slowly moving away from BSG, I wasn't sure if I even wanted to. In the end though, I decided to just let it go, just like my last fanvid. This took me some time because for some reason, I wanted to find songs that I hadn't heard and/or associated with Lee and Kara in the past. I have my own personal playlist of songs that have reminded me of K/L for years but I really wanted to go on a search for songs that were either new to me or I had never thought to apply to K/L before. Hopefully there's something here that catches your eye or interest. I've added my own personal thoughts to each track because I tend to like when fans explain their choices and start a dialogue about the characters in that way.

Feedback, comments, and thoughts are much appreciated! ♥

Everything Under The Cut.

[Note: I've made it as easy as possible for you to download. There are individual downloads for each track available if you click on the song title. There is an all-inclusive .zip file at the end of the post. And I've also included a playlist.com link embedded in this post in case you would like to preview. Enjoy!]

The Tracklisting:

Bad Sun- The Bravery

Probably the most "upbeat" (rhythmically, at least) of all the songs I chose,
I think it still manages to capture K/L's special brand of "screwed up and awesome".
It really puts me in mind of their Season 1 antics.

-----
There's a hole in you and me
That pulls us together...

Every day you bring me pain
And we savor it like rain...

Someday back when we were young
I guess something just went wrong...
-----

Starlight-Muse

It's honestly hard for me not to think of Pilots when I hear this song.
It pretty much encapsulates their entire Season 1 arc for me.
I especially love the "black holes and revelations" line-
because isn't that pretty much 4 seasons of Battlestar Galactica in as many words?

-----
This ship is taking me far away
Far away from the memories
Of the people who care if I live or die

Starlight, I will be chasing the starlight
Until the end of my life
I don't know if it's worth it anymore

Hold you in my arms
I just wanted to hold
You in my arms...

Our hopes and expectations
Black holes and revelations
-----

Lifeboats-Snow Patrol

I debated whether to leave this one in since I already had a Snow Patrol song for the final track,
but in the end I couldn't help myself.
I really get an end of Season 1, Season 2.0 feel from this one.
The lyrics about cool heads and kisses really put me in mind of their fight in
"Kobol's Last Gleaming" and their reunion in "Home".

------
Cool heads have failed,
now it's time for me to have my turn
Kiss me, kiss me, life is way too short to scream and shout
------

Also, the visual from this next stanza really puts me in mind of their space battles-
streaming light in the sky from shots fired and raider blood spattered across their vipers' bonnets:

-----
Flashed up in my wildest dreams,
the dark red blood streams, stretching out like vast cracked ice.
-----

Slow Dancing in a Burning Room- John Mayer

I honestly could post all the lyrics to this song here, because every last one of them fits.
It definitely puts me in mind of "Scar" more than any other Pilot's moment, though.
-----
It's not a silly little moment,
It's not the storm before the calm.
This is the deep and dying breath of
This love that we've been working on.

Can't seem to hold you like I want to
So I can feel you in my arms.
Nobody's gonna come and save you,
We pulled too many false alarms.

We're going down,
And you can see it too.
We're going down,
And you know that we're doomed.
My dear,
We're slow dancing in a burning room.
-----

Right Here-Staind

This was actually the final song I chose to include.
I suppose because I'm almost positive someone has probably used it in a K/L fanmix before.
But since I'm trying to make this fanmix chronological,
(I always try to do that with everything, I don't know what my deal is with that),
I used it because I really felt this song fits well with the emotions of  "Sacrifice" and "The Captain's Hand".
I've also noticed that I tend to lean towards songs that showcase Lee's point of view though I'm not sure why...

-----
But you always find a way
to keep me right here waiting
You always find the words to say
to keep me right here waiting
I hope you're not intending
To be so condescending it's as much as i can take
and you're so independent
you just refuse to bend so I keep bending till I break
-----

Runaway Car- Matt Kearney

I really wanted to find a song that told the story of
Lee's "Post-New Caprica One Night of Love" heartbreak in "Unfinished Business"...
and I fell in love with this one.

-----
Stop this runaway car
I want to get off, I want to go back
If I left you there then I left it all behind

'Cause all I'm feeling now
Is the weight of the world bearing down
I don't have answers for any of my questions anymore

I might have been standing on the top of the world
What a difference a day makes
I turned and watched you walk away
-----

Where I Stood- Missy Higgins

I really debated whether to use this song or not.
One, because this ended up being the only track that solely featured a female vocalist
(What is that? I think I just prefer male singing voices)
and I think that makes the transition to a soft/feminine track rather jarring.
And two, I've seen this song used frequently for fanmixes of all kinds.
In the end though, I went with it because for me at least, I cannot
imagine a more fitting song for Kara's mindset throughout the entire episode, "Unfinished Business".
Also? I adore this song.
-----
I don't know what I've done
Or if I like what I've begun
But something told me to run
And honey you know me it's all or none

There were sounds in my head
Little voices whispering
That I should go and this should end
Oh and I found myself listening

See I thought love was black and white
That it was wrong or it was right
But you ain't leaving without a fight
And I think I am just as torn inside
-----

Over and Over- Three Days Grace

I've associated Three Days Grace's "I Hate Everything About You" with
Kara and Lee for years, but when I heard this song on
my brother's ipod last month, I knew I was going to go with this one.
-----
So many thoughts that
I can't get out of my head

I try to live without you,
every time I do I feel dead

I know what's best for me
But I want you instead

I'll keep on wasting all my time
Over and over, over and over
I fall for you
-----

You Are The One- Shiny Toy Guns

I'm thinking this group was watching "Eye of Jupitor" when they wrote
the lyrics to this song. I mean, the name of the album is "We Are Pilots"  (!) .
I especially like how each lyric fits for the respective character as we switch from the female vocalist to the male.
-----
Your cover melting inside
with wide eyes you tremble
kissing over & over again

I try  to digest my pride
but passions grip i fear

Spin faster shouting out loud
you cant steal whats paid for
such something hurting again
murder son shes painful

You so believe your own lies
on my skin your fingers
runaway until the last time
were gonna lose forever
-----

Swallowed in the Sea- Coldplay

I really did try to cut this playlist down since 14 tracks seems excessive,
and I really wanted to take this one out... but in the end, I just couldn't.
I really feel an "end of Season 3 Lee mindset" from this song. The lyrics speak to me of Lee's personal
journey from Pilot to Politician and how losing Kara was this character's catalyst-not only to his realizing
just how much he (unconditionally) loved her, but also to his life-altering decision to leave the military for good.

----
You cut me down to size
And opened up my eyes
Made me realize
What I could not see

And I could write a book
The one they'll say that shook
The world, and then it took
It took it back from me

And I could write it down
Or spread it all around
Get lost and then get found
And you'll come back to me

Not swallowed in the sea

And I could write a song
A hundred miles long
Well, that's where I belong
And you belong with me
-----

Signs-Bloc Party

Two songs showcasing Lee's post-Maelstrom grief might seem excessive,
but I honestly never connected with this character more than I did during
what amounted to his very private period of mourning.
Never was Admiral Bill Adama's emotional disconnect from his son's
true feelings Kara-ward more painfully evident than during this time.
And never was it more obvious that Lee was the only character who had loved Kara deeply
that felt he had no right to publicly mourn for her.
I especially like the final line I've included here, which puts me in mind of
Lee's conversation with Adama in "He that Believeth In Me" and how
cylon or no, Kara was back and that was all that mattered to him.

----
At your funeral I was so upset
So upset so upset
In your life you were larger than this
Statue-statuesque

I see signs now all the time
That you're not dead, you're sleeping
I believe in anything
That brings you back home to me
----

You Are Mine- MuteMath

I don't know that this song fits any one moment in time for Lee and Kara
so much as it fits every one of them.

----
Everyone has their obsession
consuming thoughts; consuming time
they hold high their prized possession
it defines the meaning of their life

They're our objects of affection
that can mesmerize the soul
there is always one addiction
that just can not be controlled

You are mine
----

She is the Sunlight- Trading Yesterday

I've yet to find a more heartbreakingly beautiful song
to define Lee's love for Kara than this one. Another song that I really
feel spans all moments and seasons.

----
And if loving her is
Is a heartache for me
And if holding her means
I have to bleed

Then I am the martyr
Love is to blame
She is the healing
And I am the pain
----

The Lightning Strike

More Snow Patrol. But seriously? If there is a song I love more for Kara and Lee's story,
I have yet to find it. Because I honestly think that their ending in my head is that at the end
of Lee's life,
he went to join that pre-Maelstrom Kara in some beautiful place where they lived forever in peace.

Which is why I chose to end the mix with this track.

----
What if this storm ends?
And I don't see you
As you are now
Ever again

The perfect halo
Of gold hair and lightning
Sets you off against
The planet's last dance

Just for a minute
The silver forked sky
Lit you up like a star
That I will follow

Now it's found us
Like I have found you
I don't want to run
Just overwhelm me

What if this storm ends?
And leaves us nothing
Except a memory
A distant echo

I want pinned down
I want unsettled
Rattle cage after cage
Until my blood boils

I want to see you
As you are now
Every single day
That I am living

Painted in flames
All peeling thunder
Be the lightning in me
That strikes relentless
