Everything was all lit up and
it felt kind of like we were
on a platform inside some
kind of diorama
I wanted to maybe hold

Freshman Cosmology

I recall more about the cracks in the sidewalk than anything about your face that August day: how they tingled through the concrete, cutting the shadows we cast, each branch bursting into unpredictable, jagged complexity. Looking back, I know that anything resembling you has always eventually become the heart of anything resembling me. From the beginning. From that primordial moment particles got slow enough to touch. This point in time is marked eternally into the blurry, microwave shroud hanging behind every star, which present-day cosmologists weep for, so struck as they are by the fate of certain things to come together. An official astronomical opinion on the poignant transcendence of things that meet other things. Close to a decade has passed since our meeting & I haltingly find rest in this vision of convergent particularity & universality. We burst into unpredictable, jagged complexity etched forever in the south walkway along Grand River Avenue. And we don't have to remember anything.
