Innocent Blood
Właśnie skończyłem czytać "Próbę Krwi" Iana Rankina. Z czystym sumieniem mogę polecić tą książkę każdemu: Rankin jest chyba najlepszym pisarzem kryminałów na rynku. "Próba..." jest naprawdę solidną książką, nie ma w niej żadnych zbędnych dłużyzn, a każdy rozdział wnosi coś nowego do sprawy. Rankin popisuje się prowadząc nie jeden, ale trzy wątki kryminalne naraz: inspektor John Rebus nie tylko będzie starał się wyjaśnić motywy, które kierowały eks-oficerem SAS Lee Herdmanem gdy sięgał po broń, ale też tajemniczą śmierć w płomieniach drobnego kryminalisty Marty'ego Fairstone'a oraz... ale co ja wam będę zdradzał fabułę.
Kolejnym atutem książki jest też świetny język i dobre tłumaczenie. Czyta się ją jak Chandlera: ponure opisy, z cynicznymi obserwacjami, ale z dialogami wziętymi żywcem z filmów z Clintem Eastwoodem.
Niestety, nie ma róży bez kolców. Mimo świetnych zagadek, zakończenie mnie zawiodło - niby wszystko pasuje do siebie, ale trudno uwierzyć w motyw. Z drugiej strony, może to ja po prostu nie chcę zaakceptować implikacji zakończenia, które zdaje się mówić: "to ty mogłeś wtedy strzelać". Przeczytajcie i przerażcie się przemocą, która tkwi w człowieku.
A tak poza tematem: są nareszcie nowe odcinki Loserz. Dzięki, Erik!
I just finished reading "A Question Of Blood" by Ian Rankin. I can wholeheartedly recommend it to everybody: Rankin is probably the best crime story writer on the market. "A Question..." is a solid book, with no unnecessary lows, each chapter bringing something new to the case. Rankin is showing off, by running not one, but three crime plots at once: inspector John Rebus will not only try to discover what guided ex-SAS officer Lee Herdman when he reached for a gun, but also the secret behind the demise of minor crook Marty Fairstone in flames and... but I won't spoil it for you.
Another strong point of the book is the language and the great translation. You read it like a Chandler: gloomy, with cynical observations, but the dialogs are out of a Clint Eastwood movie.
Unfortunately, a rose has its thorns. Despite the great mysteries, the ending dissapointed me - everything fits, but it's hard to believe in the motive of the crime. Then again, maybe it's just me trying not to accept the implications of the finale, which seems to say: "it could have been you shooting then". Read it and fear the violence, which dwells in man.
