So, I believe the answer to all our problems was:
a) Vista is evil, but often you can learn ways to trick it, as it is none too bright
b) finding a bad connection (N maintains plugs and sockets are evil too).

Also, I had lunch on the beach with LR, and we found a wee little garter snake in the lab, with the cables.
I extended my stay until Tuesday. It is not impossible we will finish our part of this project tomorrow, but it is not likely. I also wanted to just visit my friends and maybe take the ferry to Vancouver.... so Tuesday seemed reasonable (I think).
