Don't Let's Go To The Dogs Tonight is a brilliant read. I really felt like I had met those people, much like I did when I read Mary Karr's The Liar's Club.

I haven't read Eggers mostly for the opposite reasons as you: I loved the title but was turned off by the plot synopsis.

So, should I read The Liar's Club or will it be devastating?

You might be surprised by the Eggers.

The Liar's Club is fairly devastating but nevertheless I recommend it to anyone who will listen to me. No alcoholics, just the mentally unstable.
