small ironies

I just invigilated the exam for my course. That made me feel like a grown up. Ironically, one of the other exams in the same room (a gymnasium) was invigilated by the professor who was unceremoniously dumped from my PhD committee. I said hello, he said nothing. I think after two hours he finally recognized me.

Apparently my students are not up on their pirate lore. One of the asked me what was meant by "piece-of-eight". No, this knowledge was not necessary to answer the question.

Because it is now the exam period, the coffee shop in the lobby has closed. As there are now more people in the building that usual, this is perfectly illogical. Sigh! I must walk to Eng. Sci. in the rain to get my fix.
