Sometimes he wondered if she saw right through him. She’d come in, gesturing wildly about something, her eyes fixed on his face. Other people could come in doing the same thing and they never discomforted him like this. Rufus Scrimgeour shook his head as he listened to Augusta Longbottom go on about the conditions at St. Mungo’s.
Rufus sat there listening to her, wishing he could squirm. He felt invisible under the gaze of this formidable woman. There was a window behind him. If he turned his desk, he’d be able to see it when Augusta came the next time. Well, he’d be able to look if he wanted.
The odd thing was, Rufus wasn’t certain he would look out that window rather than at the lady before him. Augusta wasn’t gorgeous, she wasn’t kind and she most definitely wasn’t someone to cross. Still, there was something interesting about this woman before him raving about whatever it was at St. Mungo’s that had upset her this time.
He was also certain the only value she saw in him was his position. It was the outline of him she saw. Rufus doubted Augusta would give him the time of day otherwise.
