Yunho/Jaejoong; PG for character death; general
jaejoong isn't okay. they're not okay, this isn't okay, and they're two seconds away from finding out the truth but they're going to die before they find it.
'run,' whispers yunho, but jaejoong's still crouched down as low as yunho is, not moving. he shakes his head no and yunho opens his mouth again, because they don't have time, this is dangerous, they're going to die -
there's an explosion behind them and yunho doesn't have time to say anything because the force of it's thrown the two of them back. yunho's eyes are still open and he's almost blinded. he clenches them shut too late and in the back of his mind, he's hearing the clinking of jaejoong's pistol as it falls away from them and jaejoong swearing, loudly. shit, he's giving away our position, yunho's thinking dimly.
but wait, they already know it because they're firing bullets this way. he feels a whir past his cheek - he's huddled in fetal position on the floor even if he can't afford it but it hurts so much - and then he hears jaejoong, to his left, grunt. he opens his eyes, sees stars, and when they're gone, he sees jaejoong. he's clutching at his bloodstained arm and his eyes are wide and gone.
'yunho,' he says, too loud. 'we're not going to die for no reason.'
yunho knows, but they don't have time for this. he wishes he had enough time to tell jaejoong that they will die for no reason if they stick around here to talk because now there's nothing shielding them. the gunshots are coming from inside the storage buildings. they're at the center of them and now there's nothing left to protect them.
jaejoong's staring at him without seeing him. his hair's singed and his hands are bleeding at the knuckles and he's got his gun in one of them again, but his hand is shaking so hard that yunho can't look away from it. jaejoong isn't okay. they're not okay, this isn't okay, and they're two seconds away from finding out the truth but they're going to die before they find it.
'i don't want to die,' whispers jaejoong, standing up on his shaking knees, pulling his gun up and letting the safety click. then, all of a sudden, he's not shaking anymore, but he's smiling and yunho doesn't know what to do because it's scared and fearless at once.
'we're not going to die,' says yunho, standing up, too. there's debris all around them. yunho can see the grey sky and he wonders if it's the last time.
jaejoong's pulled a lighter out from his pocket. 'yes, we are,' he says, and he's still smiling, looking at yunho. yunho can feel what's left of his world disappearing, but there's this feeling, like defiance and elation and a strange sort of acceptance, all at once. he understands.
jaejoong throws the lighter towards where the gunshots are coming from, and shoots with both hands, three times. the first two times he misses, and the third time is a hit. the buildings are full of alcohol, oil tanks, drugs; everything is gone in less than a second. this explosion is bigger than the last, but this time yunho is a little more prepared - as soon as jaejoong takes the third shot, they both leap as far back as they can go.
jaejoong's breathing hard, and yunho's hardly breathing at all. there's blood everywhere, flames behind them and an army ahead of them. no place is safe, but this is how it's always been.
'hey, yunho,' says jaejoong. 'i always loved you.' his gun is feet away, and even if it wasn't, he used up the last of his ammunition. there are voices behind them, and yunho knows that they're not going to bother with warnings.
'hey, jaejoong,' says yunho, voice raspy. 'i always loved you, too.'
