Oh, minnow! I love it when you post something dark and depressing, even if it's just so I can tease you about it. *g*

But in all seriousness, after reading this I had to step away for a while to really think about how it made me feel, what I thought about the use of beloved HP characters and if that worked for me, etc.

It did work for me, in that this is an amazingly heartbreaking, disturbing, and extremely well-written story. It was painful to read, yet I couldn't stop myself, and I think if you'd used original characters I would have had the same reaction.

Honestly, I think I do kind of see them as original characters. Like flessdress, at first I kept trying to make the parallels too, and that took me out of the flow a bit. So I stopped and just read it as a story about two people I wasn't familiar with and found that worked much better for me. I don't know if that's because the idea of Remus as a pedophile is that disturbing to me or what, but...

That said, now that I've read it and had time to think about it, I do find it fascinating from a fannish standpoint because how many of us haven't read fic at one time or another about a romantic relationship between characters we love that is, ahem, inappropriate for one reason or another? (Or written one *looks shifty*) Yet we romanticize it because, well, it's fandom. This is a far more realistic look at the sort of relationships we hardly blink at (even if we don't read a lot of them) when we see them posted to various comms.

And maybe that's why this story works better for me if I look at it from an original fic standpoint, and not a fanfic one.

And I've just babbled all over your journal. *g*

But see, this is why you absolutely CAN NOT backdate this fic. It's a wonderful read from any perspective, absolutely disturbingly powerful, and you are brilliant. Thank you so much for sharing this with us.

One question (and I feel so silly asking) -- what's a vest? I have a feeling it's totally different from what us Americans consider a vest.

First, a vest is an undershirt. I think sometimes you'd refer to it as a wifebeater (in the OC and so on), but probably not when kids are wearing them.

I love it when you post something dark and depressing, even if it's just so I can tease you about it.

Lol! :D Now, that's a really good attitude.

Thank you very, very much for such an amazing comment! :) I'm afraid my reply won't really do it justice...

I'm finding myself very much stuck in the middle with this one: I can see where it's not strictly fanfic, but I can also see where it is, in the sense that the story wouldn't exist without the Remus/Tonks pairing. I really do like finding out where I can take these characters, and sometimes they seem to end up in weird places. Now, if JKR had just allowed her R/S subtext to blossom, we'd all be able to write happy, romantic fics.

But actually, I think you're right about the beauty of fanfic being that you can have any pairing, any situation, and it's always going to be right. Perhaps that's where a more cynical approach isn't going to qualify properly for the fanfic label.

Thanks again for reading and commenting! *hugs*
