Chapter Three
The three members in the car hurried as fast as they could towards the hospital, but were forced to stop at traffic lights several times. One particular traffic light stayed red for a very long time and Yoochun started to feel quite irritated.
“Oh, this is ridiculous! Changmin could be dying or something and we might be too late just because of a stupid red light!” he exclaimed frustrated and tapped his fingers anxiously on the wheel.
“Take it easy, it’ll turn green soon,” Yunho tried to calm the younger man down. ”And I’m sure Changmin will be just fine,” he added, trying to sound assuring, but he actually wasn't so sure himself.
“How do you know that?!” Yoochun snapped at the always so calm and composed leader. Yunho realized that there was no point in arguing with the other man when he was in that state, so he kept quiet. Instead he turned around to check on the person in the backseat, who was as far from his normal cheery self as he could ever be.
Junsu had his legs pulled up on the seat, with his arms wrapped around them and his head resting on his knees. He was still sobbing a bit, but at least he had stopped crying. When he noticed that Yunho was looking at him he lifted his head slightly and met the older man’s gaze, and the eyes that usually sparkled with life now held nothing but worry.
Then the traffic light suddenly turned green.
”Finally!” Yoochun sighed with relief and stepped on the gas pedal.
Then a horn suddenly roared and drowned all other sounds. Startled, Yoochun snapped his head towards the sound, but before he had time to see what made such a noise everything went dark.
The first thing that came back was the pain, a dull pain at the side of his head. After a while sounds also started to break through the darkness; Yoochun could hear a lot of chatter around him and somewhere in the distance a siren was approaching. He tried to open his eyes, but the eyelids felt heavy and didn't want to open at first. However, after a while of struggling he finally managed to get them open.
At first Yoochun didn't recognize where he was, but then he realized that he was still sitting in the car, although everything seemed different from what he remembered. The car was standing still, shattered glass lay all over the place and when Yoochun lifted his head from the side window he felt something sticky at the side of his head. But before he had time to check what the sticky substance was he realized that someone was standing next to him, so he turned his head towards the person.
A man he had never seen before was standing next to the car and looked at him with a concerned expression on his face. Yoochun was just going to ask who the man was and why he was standing there and looking at him like that, but the man spoke ahead of him.
“Just stay still, the ambulance is on its way.”
“Ambulance?” Yoochun thought confused, but then he remembered something. “Changmin!” he exclaimed.
“What?” the man asked confused.
“We must get to Changmin!” Yoochun urged and moved his hand to turn the car key, but it wasn’t there.
“Whoa whoa whoa, you’re not going anywhere!” the man protested, while he pulled the driver’s side door open and put a hand on Yoochun’s shoulder to stop him from moving.
“What are you doing? Let me go!” Yoochun shouted angrily and tried to get the man’s hand of himself, but the man just wouldn’t budge. “Don’t you understand? We must hurry or we might be too late!”
“Hey, calm down!” the man shouted back. He was getting a little annoyed by now, but he composed himself and continued to talk with a calm voice. “Let’s take this from the beginning. You’ve been involved in a car accident and the only thing you must do right now is to stay here and wait for the ambulance to arrive. Think about your friends,” the man finished and gestured towards something behind Yoochun.
Yoochun turned his head in the direction the man had pointed and for the second time in one day his whole body was paralyzed with fear.
Next to him sat a very still Yunho slumped down in his seat. He had bleeding cuts all over his body and he didn't respond at all when Yoochun called his name. Then Yoochun noticed that the whole right side of the car had been pushed in and he slowly begun to understand what had happened.
A pained moan from the back of the car interrupted his thoughts and he turned his head towards the sound, but he only saw an empty backseat. Then another moan was heard and Yoochun realized that the sound seemed to come from the floor, so he leaned over to get a better view of the backseat. Then he saw that someone was actually lying on the floor in the backseat and he quickly realized that the person was Junsu.
Junsu's grey tank top was stained red and Yoochun could see that he had cuts all over his bare arms and also on his face. Then the younger boy suddenly opened his eyes and looked at Yoochun.
“Yoochun-ah?” he said with a hoarse voice. He tried to get up, but as soon as he started moving a burning pain shot through his body, so he decided it was probably best to remain still. “What happened?” he asked instead.
“I'm not absolutely sure, but I think we were hit by another car.” Yoochun answered hesitantly and looked at the man outside the car, who confirmed his guess with a nod.
“Yes, that's what happened,” the man said, but before he had time to explain any further an ambulance arrived. “Ah, it's finally here!” the man exclaimed relieved.
The paramedics got out of the ambulance and Yoochun almost laughed when he saw that it was the same guys that took care of Changmin just a while ago. When they came closer they also recognized Yoochun.
“What? You guys again?” one of them asked.
“How's Changmin?” Yoochun asked and ignored the man's surprised look.
“Oh, don't worry about him, he's going to be fine,” the other paramedic quickly dismissed the question and went to check on Yunho.
“Really? He didn't seem fine when you left for the hospital,” Yoochun insisted.
“Look, your friends here are more important right now and they're all I care about at the moment, I suggest you do the same,” the man replied while he carefully examined Yunho.
Yoochun couldn't really argue with that, so he let the man do his job and turned his attention back to Junsu, who was being examined by the other paramedic.
“Are you okay?” Yoochun asked the younger boy.
“Oh, I'm just great.” Junsu replied with a hint of bitterness in his voice and hissed when the paramedic touched his arm. “How's he?” he then asked between clenched teeth and looked in Yunho's direction.
“Well, he doesn't look that bad, but he's still unconscious.” Yoochun answered and turned to look at the seemingly lifeless leader next to him. The paramedic had put a collar around his neck and was preparing a stretcher for him. The other paramedic went around the car and helped his workmate lift Yunho onto the stretcher, then they took him to the ambulance.
Yoochun thought he should help Junsu and got out of the car, but as soon as he stood up he felt very dizzy and had to grab hold of the car door for support.
“Hey, you shouldn't be up and walking about!” one of the paramedics protested when he turned back and noticed that Yoochun was standing.
“I need to help Junsu,” Yoochun replied and willed the earth to stop spinning.
“We got this,” the other paramedic assured him. “You're no help to anyone if you pass out, so just sit down here and take it easy.”
Yoochun didn't protest much while the man helped him to sit down, because he still felt very dizzy and a bit nauseated.
The paramedics went through the same procedure with Junsu, they put a collar around his neck, lifted him onto a stretcher and took him to the ambulance. Then one of the paramedics sat down next to the two men on stretchers while the other went back to Yoochun.
“Are you feeling okay enough to stand?” the paramedic asked Yoochun. “There is only room for two stretchers, so...” the man added apologetically.
“It's fine, I can stand” Yoochun replied and quickly tried to get up, but the paramedic grabbed hold of his arm.
“Not so fast. Slowly, slowly,” the man said with a soothing voice and made sure Yoochun stood up slowly. When he was up both men walked together to the ambulance, the paramedic carefully supporting Yoochun. He helped Yoochun to get into the passenger seat, climbed into the drivers seat himself, started the ambulance and then they were off towards the hospital.
