Ok, my turn for random... and I think I will have happy/hot Hazuki dreams after this...

His boots stirred up the dust; the reddish dirt carried on the wind, sticking to the bottom of his coat. The full moon cast eerie shadows, the light playing tricks between the trees and shrubs that reflected off the thick mist. It lay low to the ground, the sign of a hot day followed by a cold night, and as the wind slowly picked up speed, the ghostly air seemed to dance and sway around the solitary figure hidden in the woods.

His back was to the sounds coming from the road. Not long now. The rattle of wheels against the dusty road grew louder, the chattering of the aristocracy almost audible. It would be a good heist, a good taking for the night and hopefully would see him set for the week. It was always too dangerous to pull multiple jobs in the one region.

Pulling the mask up over his face, Hazuki tipped the brim of his tricorn hat down, plunging his features into obscurity. The black mask made him like a shadow, a sinister smudge that framed deep, dark eyes; the collar of his jacket reached almost to his nose.

Hazuki could feel the adrenaline pumping through his veins like a Chinese drug. It worked to clear his mind and he could have sworn that his senses were heightened in his exuberant state. The light of the moon seemed brighter, the shadows deeper where he stood; it was like the night was protecting him, cloaking him in her embrace and trying to keep him from harm.

Pointing his flint lock upwards, Hazuki pressed a kiss to the chamber before stepping sideways into the middle of the road. His coat flared out as he aimed the gun backwards, his head turning in order to look over his shoulder and straight down the barrel. Side on to the approaching carriage, he knew that the driver had seen him.

Horses screamed as the coachman pulled them to an abrupt stop. The wheels rattled against their supports. A cloud of dust rose up, mingling with the moon lit fog and causing the startled voices from within the carriage to echo.

Hazuki smiled in the dark and in his mind, the shadows responded with a chuckle. It was a good night indeed.

(Anyone thing that they can reply? Another highwayman, perhaps, or someone in the coach. Give it a go and lets see how crazy this can turn out)

So, remember you asked for this...

The steady beat of the horse’s hooves matched his pulse; a deep thudding through his veins as he rode through the moonlit night. He could feel each heaving breath as he pushed the beast ever faster. He had somewhere to be and it was critical that he arrive before sunrise. The small village was miles away yet, and Yusuke knew that he’d have to press his horse’s endurance to the brink if he was to get there in time.

The horse leapt over a fallen log that he hadn’t seen on the fog covered ground. His gloved hands flexed on the reins as he shifted onto the balls of his feet, only barely managing to stay in the saddle. The edges of his brown coat caught in the wind and snapped out behind him. The sounds seemed to carry forever in dark night and Yusuke silently prayed that no one would hear.

Death would find him soon enough. He didn’t need to tempt it so soon. There was a rather impressive price on his head. The deadly cost of winning a duel against a nobleman’s son. Now he was fleeing for his life across the midnight countryside. He knew of only one safe place he could stay for the time being, until another plan could be worked out.

The village he so desperately sought had a bad reputation among the wealthy and privileged. A haven for thieves and murderers. He’d been there only once before with friends and had nearly gotten his throat slit in a bar fight. But he wouldn’t be hunted there. And while most of the men that called the place home would gladly have sold him out, they’d have to catch him to manage it.

No soldier would dare step foot within the town’s limits and for a short time Yusuke would be safe. Long enough to figure out what his next move should be. He was so lost in thought that it wasn’t until his horse pulled up short that he looked up and saw the carriage stopped in the center of the road ahead of them. He reined the beast in as it sidestepped along the dirt path and urged it forward so he could investigate.

The fog drifted around him like the ghost of some long lost lover. Few sounds could carry in the moist air, but Yusuke swore he heard the subtle cries of a woman in obvious distress. That’s when his eyes locked onto the dark figure standing only a few feet ahead of the carriage. The clouds shifted and moonlight reflected off the pistol in his outstretched hand. The sight sent a cold shiver down Yusuke’s spine.

His famous luck had certainly taken a rather nasty turn for the worse.
