Eggs don't necessarily have to stay with their mothers until they hatch.. trainers can receive eggs and nurture it themselves.

[Edgeworth had declined Kistoph's offer because of Apollo's warnings, back when Kristoph first appeared in Johto... although that action did make Kristoph slightly suspicious.]
