gas doesnt smell of rotten eggs or anything like that... you'd know it if you smelled it. The gas people will detect a leak with the instrumentation they bring out - its very sensitive and will pick it up long after the smell goes.
You may want to check your sewage pipes tho... or make sure your neighbour hasnt died and gone unnoticed haha.
forgot to add, in these flats you can smell it when your neighbours are decorating. IT could be they're using extra stinky gloss paint - i get that quite a lot from the guy downstairs and he decorates a million times a year.
I think the smell of gas fumes is similar to the horrible stink you often get from cars which have fucked catalytic converters. It's hard to describe, but it's definitely not a paint/paraffin type smell. I wonder if you've been using paint, boot-polish, nail-polish or anything with an organic solvent in it? I've noticed that if I've had the gas on after I've been I'm painting or polishing my boots, there's a very strong paraffiny smell and it can make me feel a bit dizzy. In fact, I've even smellt it when folk have been painting downstairs or next door.
As for unburnt gas, that has a very powerful and distinctive smell too and if there's a leak, you should notice it straight away.
Could be carbon monoxide or what ever the bad stuff is that you get from gas appliances. Flats should be fitted with a detector for it these days but that's not often the case.
Make sure you keep the flat well ventilated until you find out what it is.
