OMG! They picked an ACTOR!

The new James Bond was announced to little fanfare - I caught in in the Standard tonight. No less that DANIEL CRAIG!

For those of you who don't know the man he is an absolutely superb actor. He has been particularly notable in some brilliant British TV dramas, Our Friends From the North and Mother Love are two of my faves. He was also in Love is ( Read more... )

I watched that entire film on the edge of my seat, because I couldn't keep my eyes off him. The arms, the legs, the *arse*. I honestly thought he was too good to be Bond, if that makes sense.

Which is exactly what all his fans are saying. They seem to feel that it's a total come-down for him.

Personally I feel that it he does it, it will raise the standard of Bond immesurably. This is a *good* thing. *g*

I can understand their sentiment. I mean, when you think of Bond, you don't tend to think of inspired characterisation. You think, "pretty man, nice clothes, yay explosions!" Bond films are not intellectual stimulation; they are mindless enjoyment. Daniel Craig is a very good actor, and the Bond franchise isn't about expanding your acting abilities; it's about The Franchise. This won't win him a BAFTA or an Oscar, but it will do wonders for his fame and pocket change, and there's nothing wrong with that. Plus, playing Bond, at least for a while, will make him a topline name, and *that* can get him those scripts that can get him those BAFTA, so, you know, that's a pretty fucking smart move on his part.

Me, I'm just happy with anything that gets him in nice clothes and being all slick and hot, even if I do see how people may be feeling a bit possessive.

I just keep thinking that he'll be able to bring out that badass, tortured Bond glimpsed somewhat with Dalton and the end of OHMSS.

I think that he's such a good actor that we'll see a dimension of Bond which we've never been given in the films, but which was such a cool part of the (early particularly) books.

Gimme that angst and I don't care - tra la la...

Plus you know, anything that makes my mum this happy. *g*
