Although these journals are a part of the public record, I would like to reiterate that my comments in them are essentially personal. That is, what I say here reflects my thoughts stripped of anything constituting an Official Statement from the Office of the Minister for Magic.
On September 30th, the Ministry's legislators will make their decision regarding the Wizarding Domicile Conservation Act. Since the law was first proposed, I've spent the better part of my time and resources working against it. And during that time, it's become clear by the actions of those in support of the measures that the primary aim isn't, as they say, to improve the wizarding economy as a whole through housing reform. They do mean to improve their own finances exponentially; but mostly, it's the powers that go hand-in-hand with the task of enforcing this law that makes it such a critical piece of legislation.
However; as frustrating as these weeks have been, it's an essential part of the democratic process to allow for challenges to it. Next week will be almost entirely taken up by preparations for the vote on Friday (thank you, Tonks, for assisting in the particulars though it was not, strictly speaking, your obligation so to do). My only regret so far is for the people who have suffered at the hands of the Ministry inspectors. I've argued strenuously for the release of prisoners taken into custody resulting from inspections of their homes, but concessions must be made to advance the larger agenda. Be assured that when the proposed law is voted down, as it no doubt will be, the prisoners' release will be immediate and appropriate restitution made. The same is true of any confiscated belongings, save those in violation of our current laws.
