Summary: Draco makes Hermione a promise.

The first time Draco ever saw Hermione in her Yule Ball gown, he felt his head grow heavy and his palms sweat. It was bittersweet memory, his initial reaction, was to run out and take her by the hand, dip her by her waist, and kiss her romantically; basically to just swoop her off her feet. But it was such a harsh reality when Viktor Krum slowly strolled up to her and took her by the hand. It was a horrible reality to have to sit there and watch the girl he truly did love, dancing with someone else. However, only he knew how the smile plastered on her made-up face was fake. Every so often he’d glance up from the ground, something he had made contact with all night, and see her large doe-eyes staring back at him, twinkling from the chandeliered light.

Dancing with Pansy Parkinson was less than enjoyable, his legs began to ache from time to time, and what was worse was when she tried to kiss him. Gradually, as the night wore on, he found himself staring at Hermione, in the hopes that she would look back at him. She had her hands firmly across Krum’s back as he danced to a slow pace that she could barely manage to follow. She did look up at that moment, and gave him a little smirk. He jerked his head, gesturing out of the great hall and held up both hands, Hermione nodded back in agreement. Draco felt himself grow anxious, and a nauseatingly large smile came across his face.

“What’s the matter with you?” Pansy asked hopefully.

Draco returned back to his stony glare, “Absolutely nothing.”

Hermione swooped out of the great hall faster than her legs would take her, and met Draco at an abandoned entrance near it. His back was arched against the wall, feet tapping impatiently. She struggled to lift her dress, as to not trip on the frills, and ran urgently into his waiting arms. His hands found the small of her back, and she pressed her lips to his hungrily.

He pulled away, “You look stunning tonight.”

Her eyes sparkled in response, “Thanks. You don’t look so bad yourself.”

He rolled his eyes playfully and grinned, “Is that so? Krum looks like a pretty awful dancer.”

“Ah, you think you can do so much better?” Hermione said whimsically.

Draco replied apprehensively, “He dances like a gorilla, and it doesn’t quite help that he looks like one too!”

“He’s okay!” Hermione laughed.

“Fine, you date him then,” Draco said with mock jealousy.

Hermione pressed her body against his, “Now you know I couldn’t do that.”

“If someone could see us right now…” Draco broke off shuddering.

Hermione hushed him with a kiss, “We don’t have to worry about that.”

“It’s a shame Potter hates me, because I really am an okay guy,” Draco started.

“Oh please!” Hermione retorted. “You’re rotten to the core.”

“Well, I’ve taken care of you well enough, haven’t I?” Draco responded gently.

“You couldn’t have done any better.”

Later that night, the two starry-eyed lovers sat by the lake, Hermione lay her aching feet out on the grass, claiming to not be accustomed to the heels. Draco loosened his tie and took off his overcoat, gently laying it on Hermione’s cold shoulders. Hermione couldn’t have asked for anything better, it was dangerous and it was a true test of her friendship to Harry, but that made it all the more pleasurable. The sweet stolen kisses in abandoned hallways in between classes were the moments Hermione lived for. The snarky insults Draco laid on her every day only made her want him more, because she knew as well as he that it was just a cover-up.

“Promise it will be like this forever?” Hermione asked, gently taking his hand in hers.

Draco grinned at her, “I hope so. I’d do anything for you.”

“Just be nice to Harry,” Hermione said firmly.

Draco rolled his eyes, “It’s so hard when he’s such a dick to me.”

“To be fair, you did start it,” Hermione said frankly.

Draco shrugged his shoulders in defeat, “This is true.”

“I love you, you know.”

“I love you more,” Draco gently rolled his thumb over her pointer finger, sending shivers up her spine.

“Why do you even like me anyways? If your father were to find out…”

“We don’t have to worry about that,” Draco replied. “He never will. And if he does, I can make him forget.”

“I don’t like hiding this,” Hermione said uneasily.

“But isn’t that what makes it fun?”

Hermione couldn’t help but smile, “It’s the thrill of the run, I suppose.”

“You have my promises, and my heart, what else could you possibly need?”

“Nothing more.”

The stars shined brightly above them, and as Hermione lay in Draco’s arms, he felt complete. As much as he wish that he and Hermione could be seen throughout the school, holding hands and sharing hugs before classes, the relationship was best kept a secret. The thrill of being caught only sparked more chemistry and mischief. Draco had sworn to his father that he’d never love a muggle, but something about the way Hermione would raise her hand in class, something about the way she’d tuck one strand of hair behind her ears while writing quickly with her quill left him captivated. Of course, Draco wasn’t at all ashamed or embarrassed of his feelings for Hermione Granger, because he had found his true fine love.
