I'm curious, because in the comments in my Yuleletter, I realized that, yes, I have put in a particular set of rules for what I will ask for and offer. The latter, I've always had, the former, that's kind of new. Here are my rules, which go a long way towards explaining what I asked for. I looked and looked for a femslash fandom about which I was enthusiastic, but sadly, there was no intersection this year between femslash fandoms in which I'm invested and rare fandoms nominated.
For requests
- Must know entire canon to date and have it fresh in my memory without need for a refresh
- Must not be something I have received before
- Must be something for which I have a pretty strong desire
- If fandom historically sees a lot of activity at Yuletide, and what comes out of Yuletide fits your needs, leave off entirely (most British comedies fell under this rule, if not already excluded by bullet the second).
- To maximize changes of getting something you really want, if reaction to seeing fandom in tags list is, "I'll read that!" and not "I WANT THAT!", leave off, even if there are open slots on request list.
For offers
- Must know or have time to consume entire canon to date
- Must have easy access to entire canon to date and time to refresh on it
- Must be willing to write any characters in fandom's tag set
- Must have had at least a spark of desire to write in the fandom either before tag set opens or on seeing fandom in tag set
Requests and offers do not have to be the same set of fandoms, and frequently aren't: I'd have never asked for some of the things I've written, and in some cases, have no interest in actually reading in those fandoms.
What about the rest of you? Do you have a set of mental Yuletide rules? If so, what are they?
