Acronym Rant, and Hey It's my Birthday!!

Jul 22, 2015 15:15

I really despise acronyms in written conversation. I get the LOL's and the WTF's as they are generally known by most people. But the ones that are obscure and aren't universally known/used just piss me off. The minute I come across an obscure acronym in a blog, I immediately stop reading and move on. I don't want to have to take any time to look up ( Read more... )

the truth is..., weird wacky wild whoa wtf

We were/are both on LJ AT THE SAME TIME!!!

Happy Birthday, "B"!!!

Your post makes me very glad that I posted a link to all the acronyms I used to use, in the long ago, on my profile page. *Grin* Even I can't keep them straight anymore after all this time, though.

Am I right? Hee!

(Also, I agree... too many acronyms get really, really silly. It was probably ten years - seriously - before I knew what tl;dr meant. After that I kind of just stopped trying.)

BEST LAUGH OF THE YEAR for your guess!!

The difference between your acronyms and all the others is that I've known you a long time (both online and in person) and have followed your posts since day one. So all your acronyms were explained when used the first couple of times and I never had to wonder what the heck you were talking about (also, you had the helpful acronym dictionary). Also, you have a specific friends list of people who know you and who are invested in you even if they can't understand everything.

When you post to a public community, not everyone is going to understand the acronyms you use and aren't necessarily invested in your life enough to take the time to look it up. I want reading to be leisure, not work!!

And I still don't know what tl;dr means. Ha!!

I agree - I wouldn't post my acronyms in public forums either, for exactly the reason that no one would know what the heck I was talking about! People are silly.

I will tell you what it means! "Too long; didn't read." Which is not only an annoying acronym, but is rude! People use it after long posts or comments and they might as well say, "Yeah I can't be bothered to read what YOU had to say, I just want to get my all-important comment in here..."

So my guess was wrong, then? Hee!

Oh effing hell. Seriously!?! Too long, didn't read? How arrogant and shitty!! And yes to what you said about the can't be bothered, but still need to get my all-important message in here!!

I guess rude is in when it comes to the internet. Maybe I should reply with au;dbf (acronym used, didn't bother finishing).

I emailed you the meaning of IAGTGPTM.

By the way, I woke up this morning and suddenly realized how these words (The minute I come across an obscure acronym in a blog, I immediately stop reading and move on. I don't want to have to take any time to look up an acronym!! I just want to read your fecking blog without being hampered by acronym craziness) might have initially come across to you.

And I know I explained myself in my reply to you, but I should have ALSO apologized if I offended you. And I also want to reiterate with sincerity that your acronyms never once bothered me. I would buy a book of acronyms if it were written by you!!

Aw, B! I wasn't offended. I knew you were talking about blogs in general, and since you've known me for FOREVER in LJ (after all, you gave me my join code or whatever they were called, remember?), I knew you had read my acronyms as they came into use. No worries! Truly! xoxoxo

Oh yeah!! That's right!! Back when I first joined you could only join by getting a code from someone else who was already a LJ member and that person could only give out one code. I think Trish D'Lish (remember her?) or it might've been Ally (whose LJ name and Sark board name I can't remember) gave one to me, and then I gave one to you ( ... )

I think about that quite often. Even just within LJ, the fact that Sem and I both ended up having the same friend from two completely different directions, and saw each other's comments to that friend, is astounding. But even the fact that we were both on LJ at all, and all the steps that led up to that, make you wonder about destiny, fate, coincidence, whatever.

The SARK board is where I first really started connecting with people online (like you!). From there to LJ, my life has been so enriched with great friendships that I never could have imagined (plus that whole marriage to the love of my life thing that happened :-D), and so many of us are still friends to this day. I love that I have gotten to meet quite a few of them - my memories of your visits to PA are treasured memories, and I'm so glad we had those times together! Even my closest-to-home friend, Fairy Dreamer, I wouldn't have ever met if it hadn't been for the SARK board.

It's all pretty amazing, really :-) The possibilities and permutations are endless...

How did you each end up friended to the mutual friend? If not for him/her, you and Sem's stars might never have crossed!!

Yes, the SARK board was the first time I ever posted to a forum. That was back when the posts were not threaded, and everything was hard to follow, and we had to wait hours and days before the admin uploaded the most current posts, . But the moment I saw a post from you, I knew I wanted to be your friend! The first time I posted a reply to you, I had to wait more than 2 days before my reply showed up to you. And then I had to wait for a couple of days in anticipation to see if you would reply to me!!

I have a large file of posts that I printed back from the newer SARK forum. Mostly crazy flights of fancy between you, I, and several others. And other gems in between. Every now and then I go through the file and read some of them... they make me smile huge!!

Are you still in touch with FD? She and Bluma were so much fun!

It was completely random! Sem was friended to an LJer called "Morty Baby". My friend "Grammardog" was also friended to Morty. Sara (Grammardog - who used to be Sara Catgirl in the Postcard Fairies, I think?) and Sem did not know each other - Morty was just friended to both of them. Now that I think about it, Morty was also friended to another friend - possibly Vix ( ... )

We met in 2000, so 15 years now!!

I am friended to FD, but I haven't seen any posts from her in years and years. Miss those days of utter silliness. Bluma is here on LJ but she disappeared even before FD did... her username is kofeekat.

Almost everyone I've ever been friended to has left LJ. A few months ago I went through and deleted all the LJ names on my friends list that had slashes through them. I still have a handful of people on my friends list, but the only two people left on my friends list that still post/reply are you and ariadnelives.

And completely CUTE that you made sure that your most recent LJ post was of quality to insure that Sem would want to friend you. What a great adventure its been for you!!!

Woooooooooooow! 15 years! :-) Almost one-third of my lifetime :-D

I am, or was (can't be bothered to go and look lol) friended to Bluma/Koffeekat here too. I think the internet just isn't really her thing - even in the MMB days I don't think she posted all that often. I hope she's doing well :-)

I've lost a lot of LJ friends too, and periodically delete those that have disappeared. Not many of the remaining ones post - but I'll stick around forever, even if it's a little more sporadically than I used to be.
