Most science fiction fans probably recognize the Orion slave girl from Star Trek: The Original Series. That iconic character was portrayed by two actresses, Yvonne Craig (who played Marta in the episode "Whom Gods Destory") and first by Susan Oliver in the original 1964 Star Trek pilot, "The Cage", later used for the 1966 two-part episode "The Menagerie". "The Cage" was the most expensive pilot in NBC history to that point.
Susan Oliver appeared in many other television shows and movies, but her name remains relatively unknown to this day. In the 1970s, her interests moved from acting to writing and directing. She was an original member of the AFI Directing Workshop for Women in 1974, and she fought to eventually become one of the only women directing major TV shows in the early 1980's, including M*A*S*H.
Director George Perry stated, "It’s always bothered me how often Susan Oliver was (and continues to be) overlooked by the industry to which she gave so much of her life. I felt it was time for someone to finally acknowledge her amazing life and many accomplishments."
Susan Oliver died of cancer when she was only 58 years old. This documentary uses Susan Oliver’s iconic Star Trek performance as the jumping-off point for an insight into the short but remarkably full life of an actress who many critics believe should have been one of the biggest movie stars of her era.
Minicon will be screening this 97-minute documentary on Easter Sunday, March 27, 2016, at 12:00pm in Cinema Obscura (Atrium 8 of the Doubletree Bloomington hotel). A trailer for the film appears below.
