com·mu·nism (k m y -n z m)
n.
1. A theoretical economic system characterized by the collective ownership of property and by the organization of labor for the common advantage of all members.
2. Communism
a. A system of government in which the state plans and controls the economy and a single, often authoritarian party holds power, claiming to make progress toward a higher social order in which all goods are equally shared by the people.
b. The Marxist-Leninist version of Communist doctrine that advocates the overthrow of capitalism by the revolution of the proletariat.
Communism began in the 1840’s with one man, Karl Marx. He wrote the “Communist Manifesto” which was his solution to the social and economical problems of Europe in the mid 1800’s. Most people paid not attention to what Marx had to say until after the settlement of the Soviet Union and its building of a great empire after World War I, the ideas of Lenin, about communism started to control the Soviet power. It was like people own nothing, everything is for everyone, but actually everything was for the government! The Soviet Union had a great military force as all the income was for the army and the government. After the death of Lenin, communism went on and a new disaster appeared when Stalin took control of the USSR. Stalin and Hitler had the strongest armies in Europe, and they began to invade European countries like Poland and Austria, which was the main reason behind World War II. The political map began to change completely after World War II, and new forces ruled the political world. Two big masses took control of the world's decisions and destiny: the USA and the Soviet Union, the former representing capitalism and the latter representing communism. Both powers began competing in all fields: industry, space discovery, trade and of course, arms and nuclear power. Each country was trying to destroy the other, not in a declared war, but in the so-called Cold War. The world was probably divided into two groups: pro capitalism and pro communism. Among those was China, one of the biggest communist countries, which had the biggest population in the world; therefore, it was included as a Veto power in the United Nations, among the USA, Russia, Britain and France.
Believe it or not that are still some countries in the world of today that practice communism. China, Cuba, Laos, North Korea, Vietnam are all current communist countries.
