Summary: Septima’s first, and possibly last, Christmas with Bella.
Bellatrix Black had stayed at Hogwarts for winter break and though there were fewer people around, and therefore less chance they’d be caught, Septima was even more nervous about their plans for Christmas. It was always when she was most comfortable that everything fell apart. It was their first Christmas and, with Bella leaving school at the end of the year, it could be their last.
Septima walked to her room knowing Bella would be there waiting for her, possibly without clothes on. She tried to hold back the blush that threatened to overtake her face whenever she attempted eye contact with a passerby. A part of her tried to feel guilty about having an affair with a student, but mostly she worried about the next year.
As she slipped into her room by opening the door just far enough for her to do so, she saw that Bella was clothed and lighting candles then spelled them to float all around the room. Septima snuck up behind her and wrapped her arms around Bella’s waist.
‘What’s all this?’
‘It’s Christmas.’ Bella rolled her eyes and it reminded Septima how young she was. Still full of spite and attitude. She wondered if Bella would mellow over the years or still be rolling her eyes when she reached Septima’s age. Then, not for the first time, she wondered what Bella saw in her at all.
Bella pulled her into a kiss.
It had been Bella who kissed her for the first time. She’d been studying with Septima for weeks saying she needed the extra help. She didn’t. It was obvious, but Septima looked forward to their time spent together: their accidental touches, their eyes meeting, their conversations.
Bella pulled her down to the rug in front of the fire and began to undress her.
Their first time, it was obvious that Bella was the more experienced one. Septima had a long relationship years before, but her girlfriend died not long after they had finally pushed their relationship passed mere kissing. Anyone who knew of the relationship believed her love life began and ended with the girl.
She let them.
‘I love you,’ she said to Bella, who replied, ‘and I you.’
Bella watched her and it made Septima uneasy, as though she was reading her thoughts but she was so good at it that she couldn’t feel Bella’s presence there. Bella had a power that was both frightening and sexy. A power Septima liked.
‘Do you know why?’
And then she’d say things like that and Septima could never be sure. Had she been reading her mind or was she just good at reading Septima’s expressions.
‘No, why?’
It wasn’t why people would think, if they ever found out about their relationship. Bella taught Septima things, not the other way around. She had a sheltered life with scholars as parents who schooled her themselves as they travelled about the world. She’d seen many places, but experienced little life outside of her parent’s watchful eyes.
Hogwarts gave Bella a chance to run free that Septima had never had.
‘Because when I look at you I see that there really is beauty and innocence in the world; so many people want to deny it or say it is an illusion, but you show me it is real.’
Septima loved Bella for being everything she felt she wasn’t; she’d always known that, but she never thought Bella had loved her for the same reason.
