JM night

" Valllentinessss Day is fur LUVVVVVAHHHHHS!" John Mayer sang like a sweat slow jam into the mic while trying produce very Usher-like grind moves from his pelvis. Everyone laughed.

I can claim that i spent the dreaded holiday with John Mayer ( whom views it in rather the same cynical fashion)- but so can ever other person who showed up to the ACC Feb 14th.

It was the night i had been looking forward to for months. I woke up early to be first on the phone and online when the tickets went onsale. It paid off. Our seats were right of the stage. Row 20. No one as a speck. The show had been everything I had expected it would be.

The surge of energy that rushed through me as the sheer white projector curtains enclosed the stage in preparations for the roadies to come in and set up- it could not be described. Well it can, it exploded out of me in a full yell and whoop as the set started :P but that's embarrassing!

He came out in an orange and black plaid ensemble and matching inner vest, white button down dress shirt and slumpy black pants that could only be described as 'comfort style' and plain white and black sneakers. He said into the mic how we were all his date tonight and thought he should dress the part ( from the top up apparently). He started the set with 'Heartbreak Warfare' and I knew he would- It's such a great opener song with an infectious riff and pleasant reverb to it. It's the album's title track.

The show roared to life and it was every bit as great as the concert dvds. There really was no 'acting'. He moved from song to song with snippets of hilarious chatter and dialogue it the audience and his band ( all hugely talented musicians in their own fields) and even playing unscheduled songs like a huge on stage jam session with the band. Stuff from Mccartney & the wings, Fleetwood Mac, Jazz & blues standards.

Unsatisfied with my shot distance from my seats ( as you're not allowed to bring pro cameras- i had to separate my regular lens and camera body into my mum's and my pockets before being checked by security) i walked myself down 20 stairs to the actual front of the stage- so that i could be within 5 feet of the performers!
The mass of sound that i could experience that close was mind-blowing.

Even though the media bashes him, call him a pretentious womanizer- I'd still like to go and have a coffee with him and listen to him pick apart the world from his view :P

I thank him and michael franti and all the other performers for a great night.
