A loud scream wakes Jinki up.
He sits up in his bed, his heart beating so hard in his chest it hurts. A second later the door to his bedroom swings open and a wide-eyed Minho runs across the room.
“There are bugs in the kitchen!” He screams so loud the neighbors have probably heard him and Jinki facepalms because there are enough rumors circulating about him already. He would have been happy to live his life without having to hear to people whisper about his “insect infested” home for the next three months.
“There are bugs in the kitchen!” Minho is still screaming, unfortunately, and pulling the older’s sleeve. “Go kill them!” He’s panicking and can’t hold still, bouncing up and down as he waits for Jinki to get out of bed and do what all grown-ups do: kill the bugs.
With a heavy sigh the older throws his legs over the edge of the bed and stands up. His nice, warm, and comfy spot is immediately claimed by Minho who pulls the covers up to his nose. He waits without a word, simply staring at Jinki with his large eyes unblinking.
When Jinki does get to the kitchen he sees nothing. He was kind of expecting it because insects have legs. Six of them to be more exact and they tend to be fast. He looks around the room anyway, just in case, and sees nothing.
“The bugs went away.” Minho stares at him from behind the covers for a second before he scurries off to the kitchen.
The older hears another scream, followed by a “They’re on the table!”
Jinki’s quiet Saturday has started of with a bang. He walks down the hallway a little faster this time because damn it, he’s going to catch that bug this time and go back to bed but the kitchen is void of any insects - yet again.
“Where did the bug go?”
Minho is pressed up against the wall, trying to put as much distance between him and the kitchen island as possible.
“There!” He points with his small, chubby hand towards the half-empty fruit bowl and Jinki steps closer. He lifts up the bananas; removes the apple but the only thing he finds at the bottom is a handful of strawberries.
“There’s nothing here.” He picks up a strawberry and puts it in his mouth. He’s about to savor the sweet taste when Minho let’s out the loudest scream so far.
“You ate a bug!” the expression on his face is that of pure terror and his hands are balled into tiny fists pressed against his chest.
“I ate a strawberry.”
“You ate a strawberry!!!”
It takes a second for Jinki to make sense of it all.
To connect the dots but when he does he hopes the neighbors have done it as well.
“These are strawberries. Not bugs.”
Minho is staring at him like he has two heads. The older reaches back into the bowl, picks up another strawberry and put it in his mouth. He chews it slowly and let’s the sweetness fill his mouth before he swallows slowly, loudly.
“They taste sweet. Better than bananas.”
Minho still looks suspicious but at least he’s not screaming his head off. His body isn’t pressed up against the wall anymore and Jinki watches him visibly relax.
Fear turns into curiosity and the little four year-old walks towards Jinki with slight hesitation in each step.
Once he reaches the kitchen island his small hands grab the marble edge above his head and he pulls his body up until his eyes are peeking over the edge.
He looks at the fruit bowl with suspicion.
"Do you want to try one?"
"No!" Minho's feet are back on the ground and he's running around the kitchen island, across the small living room and back to his bedroom.
Jinki pops another piece of fruit into his mouth before he returns to his own room and crawls back under the covers. He sighs in content as he finds a good position and closes his eyes.
He loves quiet Saturdays.
