Yesterday we finally had an opportunity to watch Ratatouille which just_jeff had recommended back in the summer. Jeff, to me, is the most insightful person I know when it comes to any form of accessible, experiential art (writing, music, movies) and I follow most of his recommendations.

It was delightful…it was about food, relationships, expectation, morality and art. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Question for anyone else who has seen this movie: Was it just me or were there several moments of homage to Citizen Kane?

Savannah and I watched the movie together and she was delighted (and delightful). It is such a joy at this point when she is already exhibiting the occasional sign of cynical teenager to have her still excited over an animated movie. And this one, at least to me, appeared deeper than the last few “Kid” movies I’ve seen. She’s growing up so fast, I find myself continually reminding me to enjoy this stage, instead of mourning the one that just passed.

New Year’s Eve we had a party for our Homeschool co-op. We couldn’t get our meeting place until midnight, so we improvised. We had pizza and games and general silliness until 8:00. Then at 8:00 pm everybody, adults and children, got 4 slips of paper and a balloon.

On the pieces of paper were the following:

Things that I am worried about I would like to stop worrying about in 2008...
Mistakes I made I am going to release in 2008...
Situations and people that I would like to forgive in 2008...
Things I lost or am sad about...

On the balloon they were told to write:

Things they wanted to improve on in the New Year
Hopes for the future
A wish for someone they loved
Things they were grateful for

We burned the papers and released the balloons and we counted down to 8:30 and drank sparkling cider in plastic champagne glasses and blew horns and made a god awful racket. They had a blast.

And it didn’t occur to me until a week or two later that none of the kids (mostly young teens, 11-14) rolled their eyes or thought the ritual aspect was lame. They all participated eagerly, almost reverently, without cynicism or disparagement. And it made me so happy to know they are all open to new things, new ideas and have not become jaded just yet.

Thank you to everyone who expressed concern for my sister. She had a lumpectomy the first week of the year. At first, it looked really good, like they had gotten all of it, but a pathology report came back and sadly, not as good as they first thought. She will probably have to have a radical mastectomy.

They also want her to do genetic testing, which doesn’t make sense to me. If any of you scientists on flist, could explain it, I’d appreciate it. Our mother died of ovarian cancer; Kathy has now been diagnosed with breast cancer, which automatically doubles not only her chance of ovarian cancer, but mine as well. We already know we’re at risk for it, what would genetic testing do? If anybody could tell me what I’m missing, I’d appreciate it.

So, she’ll find out for sure this week and they’ll probably do the surgery pretty quick and follow up with chemo. I’d appreciate good thoughts for her.

In happier news, I’ve been having a lot of fun at the 1hour2write chats. Sometimes I’m able to write, sometimes I’m not, sometimes I am lovingly bullied into it. Had the most fun Friday night with belismakr, Cincoflex and jenabachand writing Faux Pas in Four Parts . If you get a chance, come to one of the chats, they’re fun and they do tickle my creative bone.

Also, just got into Firefly. We’ve seen Serenity and most of the Firefly episodes and I am looking for good fanfic. I’ve read the always amazing vr_trakowski’s wonderful stories and hazelmom’s Reaver Hunter. But, honestly (snob alert) I’ve gotten used to reading quality authors in the CSI fandom and I don’t want to have to slog through a bunch of bad fanfic. Yes, yes, I’m a snob. And a lazy one at that. But, any recommendations would be appreciated. *bats lazy, snobbish eyes*

More than halfway through the first month of the new year, how are you all my friends?

savannah, writing, family, gratitude
