Feb 26, 2007 17:31

Short version: enormous fun, seriously intense geekout weekend. Kicking myself for taking this long to get to a Redemption event, signed up for 2009 already.

Long version behind cut.

Basically, I enormously enjoyed the panels. Probably shot my mouth off way too much in them though ... Religion In SF

If you were at that panel, you know there are others who shoot his (or her) mouth off more...

Shame about the utterly crap mobile reception (for Orange, anyway)

That's not new- at 05 I couldn't get a signal in the building, with an Orange phone. This year I've got a Virgin phone and it was fine.

The bar prices were suprisingly reasonable e.g. £2.50 for a bottle of Old Speckled Hen, Hobgoblin or Spitfire

Those were specially negotiated con prices, which we do with the Real Ale. If you'd been drinking other stuff you'd have seen the difference...

Also had great fun at the Guns, Gadgets and Kung-Fu workshop (run by lonemagpie and sweetheartwhale Aww, thanks! We're already planning what to do next time, and I *think* it'll probably be "let's analyse some SF melee weapons (e.g. batleths, staff weapons, etc) and see how (in)effective they'd really be, how they could be used in real life, as compared to what we see ( ... )

Heh. I couldn't possibly comment...

Aha. Interesting. So much for my initial hypothesis that it was a GSM1800 vs GSM900 thing (since a friend on Vodafone was doing OK) and Virgin/T-Mobile is also GSM1800. it's an Orange-specific thing. Sigh.

Well, that would certainly explain the shocked look from Smitty when I said I thought the bar prices were surprisingly reasonable!

Sounds great, especially as I remember a friend trying to cut her wedding cake with a Klingon dagger of some sort and having all sorts of grief!

Yep, definitely.

I think that, at some point next year, I'll ask for requests for what weapons/styles people want us to test out, and we'll do half a dozen or so.

But the Batleth gets through automatically, without needing to be nominated!

OK, time to whinge at Orange. Futile, I know, but what the Hell...

Nah, that was because my "local" is the Imperial College SU bar - anything more that £1.80 a pint is considered expensive. ;) I was on entirely too much of the con-priced Strongbow myself....

Thanks again for the lifts - they made my life a hell of a lot easier (British Rail is the bane of my con-going existence!) and it was great getting to chat with you. Hopefully I'll see you around at some of the other London meets! :D

Fair point. I fence at ULU on Tuesday nights so I know what you mean! That said, the idea of a student union bar with a cocktail bar just seems, well, wrong...

My pleasure. Always like having passengers when driving any sort of even moderately long distance, just in case...

Absolutely. Got to pass you that disc of Australian country music as threatened! So what meets do you do?

Ah yes, Country & Outback. Which was... interesting. ;)

Usually just do the 'Ton these days, plus the occasional filk meet, though I really ought to try going to the LOTNA things as I'm not that far away from London Bridge and I know the pub!

The LOTNA meets are great fun but, if you've been talking to tlanti, you'll doubtless aware that my attendance is, well, sporadic enough to be legendary!

Oh, another London meet worth considering: there's a group that meets on a Saturday somewhere mid-month (exact Saturday varies, organiser texts us to confirm) at the Shakespeare Head in Holborn. Core membership are a bunch of hardcore Starfury con goers but there's a bunch of Torchwood squeers/slashers among them...
