Name: Kenichi Harada

Nicknames: Kenmei/Min by family and close friends (note: in Japan people generally refer to each other by last name unless the two parties are very friendly or related. Also I will probably refer to him more as Min - author's prerogative.)

Codename: Ronin

Birthday: February 18

Age: 17

Nationality: Japanese

mutation

Power: Tachyon energy field: Kenichi can spontaneously create localized tachyon energy fields that he can apply to any object. The charged object can then cut through anything except adamantium, although "cutting" usually works better if the object already possesses some sort of a cutting edge; hence, Kenichi's charged katana cuts much better than a charged vase. The field’s intensity and duration depends on his concentration, which is fairly strong but not impenetrable.

Power:Martial Arts: Raised in a very traditional Japanese household, Harada has extensive training in jujutsu and kenjutsu, having started since he was four. He has no exceptional talent for it but the sheer amount of time that he has spent learning it means that he is fairly accomplished, although not anywhere near a master’s level.

personality

Personality: Kenichi has a love/hate relationship with authority. He has grown up in a traditionalist society that he adores and he truly believes in the hierarchal system; however, this same system has alway labeled him as an inferior being and a waste of space. Somehow or other Min convinced himself that the system was good but had unjust sections; for instance, the part that said illegitimate children were inferior was clearly wrong since he himself was illegitimate and he was clearly not inferior. In fact, Min often takes an argument or situation that doesn't fit him and finds a way to argue it in a way that suits him. This extends to other people as well; Min is forever arguing alternate points of view and is not below arguing the infeasible and the absurd just to make a point. And what's worse is that he really will argue anything so long as he wins, because Kenichi is terribly, terribly competitive. If something can be made into a contest, you can bet that Min will make it a contest and that he will try his damnedest to win. Luckily he's not a sore loser; martial arts training has taught him that losing means you need to train more, so he's actually quite fun to compete against. (If you like to compete all the time.) Unfortunately, Min is not above being sneaky. The Japanese love to make a good business deal and people who argue with Min find that they end up arguing for what he wanted in the first place.

One of Min's greatest fears is losing his mutation. When you've grown up as somewhat of a societal reject, having a special power does wonders for making you feel less inferior, and if he could he would use his power all the time. However, energy fields are naturally somewhat destructive and when you can't control them very well, things...get messy. He hates to be out of control but even with years of experimentation he still can't quite get his power to do exactly what he wants. He also doesn't like being told he's useless or unwanted; he'll brush them off on the surface but he has a nagging fear that all the naysayers could have been right all this time and he was just too stubborn to see it. Because of that nagging fear he doesn't respond to blunt criticism well, but if you can prove him wrong or beat him using his weak point he will genuinely thank you and start working on said weakness. However, he's not a particularly "driven" person; he really doesn't have any specific goals about anything - he just likes to win. If he gains money and success through "winning", so be it, but he doesn't reach for either of his own accord.

Min is also an atheist. Sure, God can be useful to people if they really need help but he's not one of those weaklings. Min strongly believes that the best type of human being is self-reliant and unbeatable and he strives to be as independent as possible. However, it's hard to be totally independent when you're constantly surrounded by a large mob of family (plus living in an overpopulated nation doesn't help) and Min is not anti-social by any means. He does like people, really, and he's generally pretty friendly. He only pushes people away in two situations: when he needs to concentrate (such as training or studying) or when he's not really awake yet (not an early riser, this one). He has also been known to get pushy around food. (His mutation does not actually speed up his metabolism, although it's on the faster side due to regular intensive exercise; the boy just likes to eat.) But other than these extreme situations, Min's a fairly laid-back, respectful guy. When he lets down his guard he can get pretty silly, but he has a hard time opening up to strangers so this doesn't happen very often. In non-competitive situations he prefers to listen, partially because listening first will give him information that he can later use to defeat you, but mostly he just has a hard time opening up. It's not manly to talk about your feelings, you see.

Reputation: That abnormally tall Asian guy who's really snarky and really competitive. Also known as The Guy Who Eats Everything, The Guy Who Actually Likes to Do His Homework, The Guy Who's Obsessed With His Sword, The Guy Who Doesn't Know What to Do With Girls, or The Guy Who's Really Respectful. (Formerly known as The Self-Effacing Guy but that one's usually dropped once people learn a bit more about Japanese tradition.)

Likes: Japan. Kenjutsu. Autumn leaves. Food (yes, all of it, but particularly anything dessert-related). The color silver. Competitions. Winning. Most athletic activities. Cats. People who like friendly and/or silly debates. Learning. Making silly faces in a mirror.

Dislikes: Foreigners, especially those who act superior when visiting other countries. Reality television. Fussy old people. Losing. People who consistently disagree with him. People who take his food. Betting. (Min is a competition purist.) Pigeons. The color orange. Enforced bedrest. Starving. Getting caught while making faces in a mirror.

background

Family:

Father: Shingen Harada

Mother: Akane (real name unknown)

Several half-siblings

History: Kenichi is the illegitimate son of the famous crimelord Shingen Harada, which makes him a member of the ancient Clan Yashida. His mother was a local prostitute who wanted nothing to do with a baby, so Kenichi was taken in by the clan and raised alongside Shingen's other children. However, it was always made clear to Kenichi from a young age that he was second-rate and inferior because of his bastard state. This never quite deterred Kenichi, who was cheerfully ignored such statements from his elders and continued to play with the other children as equals. At the age of four he started jujutsu lessons as was required of every child in Clan Yashida and immediately fell in love with it. He didn't show a particular talent for it but he practiced longer and harder than most of the other children and eventually became the top of the class. He begged to be allowed to learn kenjutsu also (partly because he really wanted to swing a sword around) and although most of the clan disapproved, Shingen Harada was amused by his son's traditionalist interests and allowed him to learn. However, to satisfy the clan, he also enrolled Kenichi in a British-run school so that he "wouldn't be backwards and embarrass the family and maybe learn something worthwhile".

Kenichi hated his school. The masters were harsh and everyone knew about his inferior status within the clan, which made him the butt of many pranks and much bullying. He grew to associate "the West" with all things evil, and the traditionalist tendencies that he was supposed to be forgetting ironically became more firmly entrenched. He spent more and more time practicing martial arts and the only reason he did well in school was because he viewed grades as a sort of competition that he naturally had to win. (Min isn't goal-driven as much as he just likes to beat other people; he'd make a great CEO not because he wanted to be successful but because he wanted to beat the other idiots in the business.) His father was proud and favored Min slightly over his other (legitimate) children, which didn't do much to improve Min's popularity amongst the older members of the clan.

Min's powers manifested when he hit puberty around the age of 12. He tried to hide his power from his family at first, but after he nearly started two fires in the house, news eventually got out that there was something wrong with The Bastard Child. Min was forced to show his father what he could do, but rather than be horrified, Shingen called it a miracle from the gods. For Min, who was not religious, the reference to the gods didn't mean much but his father's approval meant that he no longer had to hide his abilities, although he was strictly forbidden to share his secret with those outside the family. He experimented with his mutation as he practiced kenjutsu and found that he could apply the energy fields he generated to objects which made them impossibly strong. As tempting as it was to abuse them, Min's sense of self-discipline was very strong and he actually managed to keep his powers secret for about 2 years.

Right after Min finished middle school, his father heard of an exclusive boarding school specifically tailored to "mutants" like his son. Shingen didn't need much persuading after he heard the "mutant school" bit and without much ado Min was packed off to Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, affectionately known as The Mutant Institute. Min, needless to say, wasn't too thrilled about his sudden send-off into what he considered a land of barbarians and he was rather sullen for his first few months at the Institute. But after the initial culture shock settled into an minor chronic longing for Japanese food, Min realized that America wasn't too bad and warmed up to his fellow students. The next few years were mostly uneventful - Min went through high school with its usual bucketloads of hormones and exaggerated emotional highs and lows; he confronted mutant prejudice alongside cultural prejudice; he practiced, he studied, he joked around. Now that he's preparing for his last year of high school, he's a little sad to be near the end of his Institute days and is looking for the next step to take.

physical

Height: a little shy of 6’

Weight: 155 lbs.

Hair: Black/brown

Eyes: brown

Appearance: Min is huge for any guy, much less an Asian one. He’s already over six feet at age 17 and he’s liable to grow even taller, and constant exercise has added muscle to a naturally long frame. His slightly broad shoulders help to mask the fact that he's rather skinny, although not for lack of eating or exercise. He’s also been blessed with a beautiful facial structure and has been invited to model in Japan before, although he never accepted any offers ("real" men don't model. Psh.) His hair tends to be on the longish side, not for any cultural reasons-he’s simply too lazy to cut it.
