A poem

Atop the Detritus

I am building a scaffold in my heart
in that lighted expanse over the waters
where the remains of deflated loves
have sunk beneath the depths to detritus.

I have drawn your silver name across the sky.

So often I have breathed my life into
an image of you
and watched your face watch mine as down you go.
How is it that I find you still beside me
on this rail outreaching wave and rock below?

We watch as soul and time take up their tools.

I am clinging to that place
where I have known your face
and more.
Where I will find the heart and mind to hold you
in the house that we watch rising on the shore.
