You have really good taste in music. I notice you make a lot of posts mentioning bands that I love. Are you into the powerpop scene at all (please forgive the really stupid name for the genre - it tends to turn some people off, but it [the name of the genre] has been around for 30 some years so I guess it is going to stick around)?

hee, thank you! i like to think that i have very good taste in music myself, although it's probably more accurate to say that i just have my taste. *grin*

i'm not sure that i know what the powerpop scene is; i tend not to think about genre as much as i think about "do i like it or not". but give me an example, and i'll tell you! :D

I guess "scene" was the wrong word, I'm not much into any scenes myself, I guess, I'm more saying that I tend to seek out bands that are considered some sort of powerpop, and I usually end up liking them.

Powerpop has its roots in the 50s and 60s with bands like the Beatles, the Beach Boys, the Zombies, The Hollies, Big Star, the Who, The Kinks, etc. It is the fusion of melody, hooks, and rock, often with fabulous harmonies.

A good list is here. A lot of the bands on the festival you are going to are, if not powerpop themselves, then at least frequently enjoyed by powerpop fans and exhibit some of the powerpop earmarks. Matthew Sweet, Fountains of Wayne, Ben Folds/Five, XTC, Fastball, Aimee Mann The Posies, these are among the most commercially successful powerpop bands, but most are relatively unknown and remain on indie labels. Jason Falkner, Jellyfish, Brendan Benson, Bleu, etc.

Also check Wikipedia - they have a really good page about it and a pretty good list of bands hereI don't concern myself with genres too much and ( ... )

oh, okay! then yes. i love powerpop. i wouldn't have called it that, but i dig it. fountains of wayne and the kinks are among my favorites at the moment, besides the bands i've mentioned here.

alt.country is one of my very favorite genres, for sure. :D
