Dear Minions: I thought that you would like to know that there is, in fact, an actual town in New Jersey called Point Pleasant. Zip Code 08742. How's that for random information I learn while doing my job? Love, Min

All Too Sweet To Last, by
annakovsky. HP. Hermione, PG. Kovsky has taken an idea that's ridiculous (Hermione as a skater) and turned it into a lovely little piece of fic that's sweet and honest and packs an enormous emotional wallop, all without skittering off into total cracktastic or even sort of weird and out-of-universe. It's a sharp look at how things might go, and it's just heartbreaking.

The Signs That We Missed, by
redbrickrose. Angel: the Series. Ensemble, gen. Spoilers through the end of the series. This is ... this is the most perfect good-bye to this show that I've read, covering all the bases and all the voices and, basically and despite some formatting that made it hard to read, nailed everything I've wanted to say since "Not Fade Away" aired. Amazing stuff.

A republican Senator from Alaska wants to apply broadcast decency standards to subscription cable services: Stevens said he disagreed "violently" with assertions by the cable industry that Congress does not have the authority to impose limits on what they air.
+ It's not political, but it's still news: I've been watching the whole John Chaney and his goons incident unfold, and
the more I read about it, the
more it makes me heartbreakingly sad.
For those of you who don't follow college sports, John Chaney, head basketball coach at Temple University and - while noted for having a volatile temper - generally well-respected man, sent a player into a close game a couple of weeks ago, telling him to "foul at all costs". This player, Nehemiah Ingram, sure fouled St. Joseph's senior John Bryant - fouled so hard that he broke Bryant's arm in two places, ending the St. Joe's senior's season and his college career. After the game, Chaney himself referred to Ingram as "a goon". You send "a goon" in with instructions to foul, and he breaks a kid's arm. There's no good in that, there's no sportsmanship of any kind in that, it's simply unacceptable. And Chaney might be contrite, he might be sorry that it happened, but it happened and he knows what he did and he is not nearly as sorry as he should be, and that fucking pisses me off.
This isn't the pros. This isn't the NBA. You guys know how I feel about this, because of my job - this is a bunch of kids playing a game and at a school like St. Joe's, they're mostly playing because they love to play. And Chaney, desperate to win and send Temple to the tournament, does something inexcusable and, you know, marrs John Bryant's entire career.
Here's what's so sad: Bobby Knight will always have an asterisk by his name, even when he breaks Dean Smith's career victories record next year, and it will say, Throws chairs and mauls players. John Chaney will always have an asterisk by his name for this, even though he is an amazing coach and even though he broke down barriers for coaches of color, same as John Thompson Sr. and Tubby Smith did. John Chaney will have an asterisk that says, Breaks opponents' arms to win.
If Temple keeps him, it's a smear on their program. If they let him go, it's a heartbreaking end to the story of a great coach who will never work anywhere else.
And John Bryant won't play basketball again, because "a goon" broke his arm on the orders of his coach.

Hey, it's series renewal time! Kristin at E!Online looks at the shows that are already gone, that have little hope to be renewed, that should be renewed barring all possible emergencies. Interesting stuff, and the only one of my shows that's not a lock is The West Wing, which should pick up considerably when they elect them a new president.
