I lack the descriptive words for how much I absolutely don't want to be at work today. It's 75 and sunny and there's a cool breeze, and I want to go home and open all the windows without air conditioners in them and take a long nap. This desire is compounded by the fact that despite having asked for work to do today, I have literally nothing to do this afternoon. Yet I have to be here. I hate the working world.

But at least y'all won't be bored, so that's a good thing.

Fic Recs (Or, I Meant For This To Be Mostly Femmeslash, Whoops):
+ Family of Women, by glossing. A:tS. Cordy/Nina, NC-17 (with mentions of Cordy/Connor, Cordy/Angel, and Angel/Nina). This takes a pairing that is, to my mind, completely ridiculous, and turns it into something bitter, violent, gorgeous and hopeful, all at the same time. The ending, in particular, took my breath away and made me grin like a complete loon. *thumbs up*

+ Night-blooming Heartsease, by julad. HP. Neville/Snape, PG. Post-Hogwarts. Sent in resonant8's Transfigurations universe, this is a gorgeous story about Neville, and bravery, and the strange and often brutal comforts of war. Gorgeous, blunt, and stark - flawless.

+ The Familiar, by resonant8. HP. Harry/Snape, R. Post-Hogwarts. So this is totally my guilty pleasure pairing. I know it squicks a lot of people, but I have a total perverse love for it when it's done well. This is done well. It's clever, and the voices are spot-on, and there's a frog. How can you not love frogs? Worth a read, once you stop twitching about the pairing.

+ Subversion, by ukcalico. lotrips. Dom/Billeh. NC-17. Funny, stunning narrative voice, a few great moments of utter hilarity, and absolutely the hottest thing I read this week.

+ Relativity, by glasgow_blue. lotrips. Dom/Billeh. PG. Quietly, subtly gorgeous. Lovely take on beginnings and endings. And this line: Dom would freeze-frame this, too. The whimsy. It might just be the best of all parts.

+ Natural Talents, by doyle_sb4. Firefly. Kaylee, G. It's about Kaylee and her ship, and it's absolutely spot-on in voice and emotions and visual picture.

+ The Story Of Your Life, Starring Gwynneth Paltrow, by alephtav. Spider-man. Peter/MJ, MJ POV. PG-13. A fic that almost makes her real, almost makes her - for me - a character I could care about. Absolutely spot-on perception, too: And you hate yourself for asking, hate yourself for worrying, "will this be my life, forever waiting for the hero to return from battle?", but it doesn't stop the doubt from settling in your stomach. It tastes like last night's pizza, like morning-after beer.

In The News:
+ F*cked by the F*CC. I continue to read the news because I enjoy having high blood pressure and pounding headaches. Really. I do.

Fandom:
+ Dom/Billeh recs. For those of you who think I don't rec enough hobbit fic anymore. Go. Read. Stop bitching at me. *grin*

+ Kill Harry, Vol. 1. Gorgeous comic. Hilarious and a lovely adaptation.

+ The Camelot Project: a database of Arthurian legend, text and images at the University of Rochester. In fandom because ... well, because I said so. It's a fandom. Oh, shut up and go read it.

+ The Two Lines Challenge. Multi-fandom; you get two lines of a song and you write a fic inspired by - but not songfic of - those lines. Go sign up. If I wasn't on a fic-writing hiatus, I totally would. Dude, I have no willpower. Fuck.

+ jillybinks has made a gorgeous MonaBoyd mood theme. If I wasn't so in love with my girlfriend and girlfromsouth's themes, I'd be all over that. Alas, I love my girlfriend more than Dom.

Community Pimps!
+ hp_britglish. A reference point for Americans or non-native British English speakers to ask questions about British English as would be used or spoken by native Brits.

+ inkstinks. A reference community for writers trying to be published; not for posting fiction or other works, but for the nuts and bolts of the writing and publication racket - how to find an agent, how to submit a manuscript, contests and prizes, etc. This is just what I needed.

+ meta_arthur. For historical research and discussion regarding King Arthur. Read the rules first so earthmagik doesn't have to kick your ass, pls.

Random Crap Wot I Found On The Internet:
+ The Paranoid Pessimist's Guide To LiveJournal. Guilty of a few of these myself, yes.

+ The University of Virginia's Electronic Text center has four of Andrew Lang's Fairy books online (scroll down and look for Lang). Those books - which my mother still has, and which I should thieve from her sometime - were staples of my childhood reading.

+ An analytical study of LiveJournal userpictures. Mine can be explained, for the most part, by the statement "people wot I like to look at".

+ Dook University is giving each of their 1,650 freshman an iPod. As zerbie said, that's either really cool, or really shameless. I say, it's Dook, therefore it's shameless. but also really, really, really fucking cool.

+ Kevin Smith kept a diary while he was shooting Dogma. Makes for some interesting reading, actually.

+ Someone is filming a Bollywood version of Reservoir Dogs. I'm frightened. Hold me, friends list. *clings*

+ Live Music Archive. I think you can download complete shows from this. If that's the case, coooool.

+ Follow-Up Songs To One-Hit Wonders, courtesy of McSweeney's. Only interesting because on Tuesday, unprompted by this list, we dialed 867-5309 with all the Chicago area codes, and did not get a single real person on the other end of the phone.

+ future soundtrack for america: a McSweeney's project in conjunction with MoveOn.Org and Music for America, it's a fundraising effort for groups like Music for America and MoveOn.Org. Go look at the track list and then buy the damn thing as much for the music as for the Get Bush Out Of Office fund.

+ Oscar Wilde Quote Generator. In case you need a witty Wilde quote to smack someone down with.
