I've only just started reading the first chapter of
xie_xie_xie's story Plans which, as you might know is the first in a series, and just this sentence alone made me remember why it's my ultimate QAF season 6 all over again:
I know that living with Brian all these years has probably destroyed your
ability to communicate in complete sentences containing complex expressions of human need and emotion, but set your
inner lesbian free and see if you can tell me What. The. Fuck. Is. Going. On. ~ Melanie
Opposed to a lot of people who didn't like the character of Melanie at all, I always felt very affectionate toward her. I like her looks, I like her attitude. Even though or maybe because she doesn't get along with Brian most of the time, their interaction has some of the funniest moments and wittiest dialog of the show. And
xie_xie_xie just knows how to play that and the inner dialog of her character.
It's my opinion that especially those "smaller" or "insignificant" characters are often the hardest to write because they might have a lot less interaction on screen which leaves you with a lot less to work with. On the other hand it probably offers more freedom of how to write their "voice" but it also make you deviate from canon as you don't know their canon.
I made the stories Plans, Decisions, Desires and Risks into pdf-files and now I can read them all in one big swoop! Happy retreading to me...
