A drive up North

Yesterday I took a drive into Wisconsin to hike on the Ice Age Trail at Lapham Peak State Park. Don't let the name fool you, though. Wisconsin doesn't have any mountains, just some hills formed by glacial moraine. Lapham Peak has an observation tower on top from which you can view the Milwaukee skyline and a whole bunch of other glacial hills around the area.

Wisconsin is very pretty, but the southern region is still flat and farmland. There are more trees than there are in Illinois, but not the expansive wilderness I was looking for. Lapham peak does offer backpacking campsites, but its so close to roads, and I'm looking for a place to get away. Well at this rate, I'll only have a few long weekends over the summer to do some backpacking, so I may have to go farther north into the national forests anyway. Actually, depending on how this grad-school thing works out, I may use a 4-day weekend vacation I took in July to go up to the Apostle Islands and hang out on one of the islands for a couple of nights.
