Your Etiquette Update Straight From The Source: Ms. Emily Post

1. Fabrics: There is a difference between summer whites and winter whites, denoted by the fabric and slight color variation. Summer fabrics include cotton, linen, organdy, and silk. Winter fabrics are woolens, heavy cottons and corduroys, suede, satin, and velvet. The times for switching between summer and winter wardrobes depend on the weather where you are. (READ: It's ok to wear linen in MS because it's still unbelievably hot)

2. Shoes: Sandal-look high or low heels in leather, suede, satin, or other kinds of textured material are often worn with formal and semiformal winter outfits. You might want to wear stockings (stockings are only optional if the event is evening and formal, the rest of the season, they are a must) since this is a formal, winter occasion, but make sure no hosiery seams are visible at toes or open heels. When you do wear stockings, make sure they're the sandal-toed kind. Casual flat sandals are limited to warm weather when it is appropriate for legs to be bare.

3. Eight Women's Fashion Misdemeanors: 1. Clothing that is too tight, too short, or too revealing for the occasion. 2. Dandruff flakes on dark garments. 3. Visible stocking-foot seams with open-toed shoes. 4. Buttoned garments that gap and show skin (your clothes should not be under stress) or underwear better left hidden. 5. Overly dressy or too-high heels with casual clothes like jeans. 6. Wearing a dress meant for evening during the day. 7. Jewelry that jingles or clangs so much that others are annoyed. 8. Torn hems and linings that show.

4. Eight Men's Fashion Misdemeanors: 1. Poorly fitted clothes- too baggy or too tight. 2. Shoes in bad condition. 3. Sandals with a suit. 4. Socks worn with sandals. 5. Socks that show when you're standing, shins that show when you're sitting (due to short socks). 6. A tie with a short-sleeved shirt. 7. Too much jewelry- heavy on the chains, rings, and bracelets. 8. Dandruff flakes on dark garments.

I know that I am guilty of several of these misdemeanors. Now I know. And now you know too, and have absolutely no excuse to look shabby this fall! Have a wonderful week!
