The Happy Ending, Part 4

Jun 03, 2008 08:54

And there she was, once again standing in front of me.
--------------------

"Hey Eddie, long time no see."

Her voice still sounded like music to me.
--------------------

"Wow, it's such a surprise to see you. How did you know I was here?" I asked.

"My mom told me she was coming here for a little housewarming party for you, "she said. "So I thought I'd come by and say hi. Hey, you're not going to give me a hug?"
--------------------

She had no idea how long I have been waiting to hug her again.

She came in and spent a little time at the party, but she didn't stay very long. She said that she had to get home before it got too late.
--------------------

We did exchange numbers though and that next Tuesday she invited me over to come see her house.
--------------------

"Eddie! I'm so glad that you came."
--------------------

She smiled and said, "Why don't you come on inside, there's somebody I'd like you to meet."

Those were words I didn't want to hear, I was positive that she was going to introduce me to her husband.
--------------------

But when I entered her house, I saw somebody other then a husband. Actually, two somebodies.
--------------------

She looked kinda nervous as she said, "Kids, come here please."
--------------------

"Eddie, I'd like you to meet my kids Charlie and Sandy."

I was quite surprised to meet these children. I was expecting just a husband, not children too.
--------------------

I didn't get to talk to them but for a minute because they had to head to school. Sandy was the spitting image of Abigail.
--------------------

Charlie, while very cute, had a strangeness about him.
--------------------

Abigail had many many books, so while she was seeing the children onto the bus I grabbed one and began reading.
--------------------

"My my, is that Eddie reading a book without it being a required reading?" I heard from behind.
--------------------

I put the book down and said, "Well, you know I thought it had pictures in it."
--------------------

"Your kids are beautiful Abigail, your husband must be so proud." Maybe I shouldn't have gone right out there and said that, but sometimes I let words just fly out of my mouth.
--------------------

"Oh, I'm not married Eddie. The twins are a wonderful gift from a bad relationship." She smiled. "I bet you're wondering about Charlie."
--------------------

"Well," I was careful what to say next, "I was a little curious. But if you don't feel like sharing, I understand."

She laughed and said, "Well, I'll tell you but it involves telling you about my father."
------------------------------

And then she began to tell me the story about her father...

He was apparently a very eccentric man who thought about the stars only.
----------

He had spent all the money he could on things to get him closer to the stars.
----------

All he thought about were the stars, outer space, and of course aliens.
----------

He would spend all his time sending lights into space hoping to get a signal.
----------

One day he got that signal back, but it was not what he was hoping for.
----------

He didn't know how long he had been gone, but it was at least a month.
----------

Then when they were done with him, they dropped him on the Earth and zoomed away.
----------

He was very angry because he had been violated and wanted to know what they did to him.
----------

To find out what they did to him, he built a laboratory.
----------

He did all sorts of experiments to try and find out what they did. He always came up with nothing.
----------

Then one night he started getting sharp pains in his abdomen. He thought for sure that the aliens had put some virus in him and that he was now dying from it.
----------

But instead of dying from a virus, he actually had a baby. He named her Abigail after his mother.
----------

Even though she was from the aliens, he loved her as soon as he set his eyes on her.
----------

He was a great father. He even built her a room all her own. Now all his thoughts revolved around being a good father and raising Abigail right.
----------

The years flew by as he watched his daughter grow. Before he knew it...
----------

She was a beautiful 10 year old girl. He taught her his favorite game chess.
----------

And he read to her all the books in the house.

They were very close and she was so very smart. When she asked why she didn't have a mother, he told her the truth. That the aliens had taken him and given him the most wonderful gift in the world.
----------

There was a woman though that treated Abigail as her own daughter.
----------

Their lives were as perfect as they could get, until one day when Abigail was in school.

An experiment that her father was doing had gone wrong as if somebody had tampered with the machinery.
----------

And then out of nowhere this man appeared. Nobody knows what he did exactly, but the end result was not good. Abigail's "mother" was in the house and saw it all through a window but all the door were locked and she could not get out to help.
----------

The strange man left as quickly as he appeared. Abigail's father laid out on the grass as if he were asleep.
----------

When she got home, Abigail's mother told her what had happened.
----------

She told her that she would always take care of her and never leave her.
----------

They also decided it would be best to move somewhere new, where nobody could find them. Her mother wanted to be careful that nothing happened to Abigail.
------------------------------

Once she was done telling me that story, I was still confused as to why her son was different.

She laughed and said, "Well Eddie, I'm half alien and Charlie has inherited some of my alien genetics."
--------------------

Over the next few months, Abigail and I talked a lot on the phone.
--------------------

I also spent a lot of time with her and her kids. I even brought my old swing set from my parents house and set it up at my house.
--------------------

I enjoyed getting to know her kids. Charlie was really quiet and reserved. He would always ask if I would read him stories.
--------------------

Sandy was a little girl into sports. I would try and toss the football with her, but I would drop the ball way too often.
--------------------

One night I invited them over for dinner. Abigail was helping me get the food out to get ready to cook. As I watched her, she looked so beautiful.
--------------------

"Abigail," I said. She turned around to look at me and that's when I did it.
----------------------------------------

-The whole alien thing was not part of my original plan for this story, but silly Charlie had to come out with green skin!
-I hope you enjoyed it and it wasn't too jumpy.
-Thanks for reading!!
