Answering

Comment on this post and say YO BABY ! I WANT TO DO THAT INTEREST MEME or something like that. I will choose seven interests from your profile and you will explain what they mean and why you are interested in them. Post this along with your answers in your own journal so that others can play along.
So,
dragonsinger asked me about the following: paul goebel, air gear, airmyu, j. keith van straaten, meganes, run & gun, roman dirge
Roman Dirge is the creator of one of my favorite goth comics of all time, Lenore. You have to love a really super adorable little dead girl. He also worked on Invader Zim, the coolest cartoon ever on Nickelodeon (well, considering that it was a Jhonen Vasquez cartoon, and Jhonen brought us Johnny the Homicidal Maniac (g)). He also has an LJ, which I just saw when I tried to see if his website was still alive. If you want to check out his art, go to
taxidermied.
Paul Goebel and J. Keith van Straaten were both involved in my favorite Comedy Central game show, Beat the Geeks. Paul was the TV Geek, and even now pops up on tv as The King of TV. He also has a cd where he sings classic tv theme songs, which is good (and which I have autographed). His website is at
http://thekingoftv.com/. J. Keith was the first host of the show, and set the tone for polite snark. He also still pops up, usually on E! it seems, to comment on pop culture stuff, as he is a comedian. His website is
http://www.jkeith.net/. What the J. stands for is a mystery. (g)
The Meganes are a group of three characters from Prince of Tennis - Inui Sadaharu (voiced by Tsuda Kenjiro) and Tezuka Kunimitsu (Okiayu Ryoutarou) from the Seishun Gakuen (Seigaku) tennis team, and Oshitari Yuushi (Kiuchi Hidenobu) from the Hyoutei tennis team. The name comes from what unites all three characters - megane is Japanese for glasses, which all three wear (although Oshitari doesn't need them). In the TeniPuri crack tradition, they released 5 singles, plus a song on Oshitari's album. Sadly, they just released their last single. (sobs) The songs are good, and their voices work really well together (and are really hot).
The last three tie into each other. Air Gear is a manga created by Oh! Great, about a teenager named Minami Ikki, who becomes caught up with the latest trend in his world, mechanized rollerblades named Air Trecks, which can practically let you fly when you do some tricks. Teams of AT riders, known as Storm Riders, compete to be the best in underground tournaments. Part of the way of AT involves different styles, or Roads, each of which are led by a King - and not only is it hard to reach that level, there's also a lot of intrigue going on, evidently. Of course, being an Oh! Great manga, there's also comedy and gratuitous fanservice. It was turned into an anime, which I just started watching, and I'm enjoying it. I haven't yet read the manga, and I need to.
Now, AG was also turned into a live action musical - two of them, actually - which fans, in the grand tradition of other anime based musicals, call AirMyu for short. I found out about both because the aforementioned Tsuda Kenjiro plays Spitfire in both the anime and the musical. Being a massive fangirl of his, I just HAD to see the musical first (especially since it took him a while to finally sing on his image songs, even though he can!). I was also amused that Kamakari Kenta and KENN both reprise their anime roles (Ikki and Ikki's best friend Kazu, respectively) in the musical (although both had already been in the Tenipuri musicals aka TeniMyus). Some wag once joked that they cast the anime with the musical in mind. (g)
So, I saw the AirMyus - in fact, you've seen me watching them in the break room during lunches, as that's the unsubtitled musicals I've watched there. The music is really good, as are the performances - plus there's a lot of a different kind of fanservice (Kousuke!Romeo's crotch grabs, Spitfire's flirting with Ikki and, in AirMyu SRR, MacBeth, Ryuuji!Ikki molesting Kazu, Romeo and Juliet's love (especially the kiss between Kousuke!Romeo and Juliet in SRR)... heck, just the gay that is both Romeos (but especially Kousuke!Romeo), Puck, and Juliet) (g)). I've joked that I came for TsudaKen, and stayed for Team Bacchus, as my LJ layout shows. They may be the antagonists, but they just rock. (g)
Now, 4/5s of Bacchus are the Japanese boyband RUN&GUN, so of course I had to go find their music - and you know I like the sparkly pretty dancing boys, so you know what happened next. They are indeed most sparkly and pretty - I should burn Memory of Voyage to DVD, so you can see the music videos, especially the one that reminds me of Tron. (g) Thank all that's holy that I learned about them when they were all 21+, so I don't feel guilty about perving on them. Then again, certain people invite perving with their AirMyu performances (Kousuke and Yuya, I'm looking at you.). I then also had to start checking out their other works, which is why I'm now watching a romantic comedy anime called Lovely Complex (and being an R&G fan, I crack up because the tallest member, Akira, who's 5' 11", is playing the uber-short main male character in LoveCom - and, of course, TsudaKen is ALSO in it), and I'm going to give the new Yu-Gi-Oh! series in Japan a shot once the fansub comes out (damn you, Yuya!!!! I didn't want to watch the duel motorcycles!!! Go back to reading manga while drunk in your bathtub instead!!!). Anyway, to see what the lineup looks like, just look at my LJ layout - the post that says precisely who is who is
here, although R&G is everyone except for Matsumoto Hiroya (Juliet) on the far right. (g). There are also
ag_myu and
wishing_on, for AirMyu and R&G communities, respectively, for more info.
Side note: now you also know, from that last sentance, why I'm watching sentai. (g)
