Well, I got a new, cheap yet well reviewed power supply, so the computer's fixed. Of course, I also had somehow pulled my trapezius muscles while the computer was down - that's the muscles in the neck and shoulders. I have no idea how that happened, and neither did my doctor. All I know is that I could barely move my head for a few days. Ice helped, so I went back to work on last Friday, since it was Friday - but I ended up hurting so much they sent me home. Since I had gotten paid, I went to the doctor, and the meds plus ice have helped. I'm much better, although still sore.
Hey, memes that I want to steal... so, I'm stealing from
dragonsinger, who stole the first one from
roadtriphome:
1. How old were you in 1980?
For the vast majority of it, 5 - the last 5 days I was 6.
2. How old were you in 1989?
Again, for most of it, 14 - 15 at the very dead end.
3. Were you a Toys 'R' Us kid?
Hell yeah! I was a suburban JAP growing up.
4. Did you watch Transformers?
Oh, lord yes! I had a bunch of the toys (and GoBots as well). I loved it. I even loved the movie. This is probably why I don't like the newer series, as I prefer the older style.
5. Did you see E.T. on the big screen?
Multiple times. I never want to see it again.
6. Did you own a Lite Brite?
Yup, with multiple sets for it.
7. Who is your favorite Golden Girl?
I don't know - I'll go with Sophia, because she cracks me up.
8. When someone says "Who you gonna call?" you think?
"Ghostbusters!" I still crack up at the dancing Hasidim at the end.
9. What was your favorite toy?
I don't know - I loved my Cabbage Patch Kid, my Transformers, my Voltron, Legos, my computers, and even my Barbies. I don't think I have a favorite.
10. Did you have a Pogo Ball?
I think so - I remember playing with one, but I'm not sure if we owned it or not.
11. Did you listen to New Kids on the Block?
Oh, yes. I saw them in concert at Jones Beach, iirc.
12. What New Kid did you have a crush on?
Jonathan - even then, I had interesting tastes in men.
13. Did you play M.A.S.H?
I don't know, unless I played it under a different name. It reminds me of Horse, maybe?
14. Did you watch The Care Bears?
Yup.
15. Did you have jelly bracelets?
God, yeah.
Where did 16 and 17 go?
18. Did you ever own a slap bracelet?
Yup - my sister and I used to attack each other with them.
19. The Breakfast Club or Sixteen Candles?
Breakfast Club, all the way.
20. Did you have a crazy hair style?
I had short permed hair at one point... and I did use Sun-In, does that count?
21. What was your first bike?
I honestly don't remember.
22. Name one thing you still own from your childhood?
The sign-in board from my bat mitzvah reception, signed by my classmates. A lot of my stuffies/dolls are at my grandmother's - Mom took them from us when she moved down here, since we were in HS then. :^(
23. Did you have a Cabbage Patch Kid?
Multiples! We had the preemies and the pets, even.
25. Rainbow Brite or Strawberry Shortcake?
Rainbow Brite, although we had both - I saw them at my grandmother's.
26. Did you watch Miami Vice?
Oh, yes - we even had the soundtrack.
27 is missing too!
28. Did you own a Trapper Keeper?
Yup, multiple ones.
29. Atari or Nintendo?
Both - Atari for Pong and Tank, and Nintendo for Super Mario Bros.
30. Did you play Pac-Man?
I have a funny story about this - I broke my left elbow when I was a kid, at Passover. I had just gotten a handheld Pac-Man game, and amazed the nurses by how well I was playing it, with my off hand, while waiting for the doctor. Pac-Man was a game back from the day when I actually could play them, before it became all about button mashing.
31. Which was better: Jem and The Holograms or Barbie and The Rockers?
I'm gacking
dragonsinger's answer for this, because it's perfect: "Oh, Jem all the way...she's truly, truly outrageous." Did you see her on Robot Chicken? (giggles)
32. He-Man or She-Ra?
She-Ra, because at least she didn't have a crappy movie.
33. What movie scared you the most?
Jabberwocky, by Terry Gilliam - I never finished it. I'm serious!
34. Did you try to dance like Michael Jackson?
Didn't everyone try to moonwalk?
35. What is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear "flux capacitor"?
"Marty..." - Doc from Back to the Future
36. What other colors did Pepsi come in?
Yes,
dragonsinger, it was indeed clear, and that flopped big time.
37. Roger Rabbit or Howard The Duck?
If we're talking movies, Roger. I love the Howard comic, but the movie... Roger was better.
38. Did you ever beg your parents to have your school picture taken with the 'LASER' background?
No, I don't remember having anything like that.
39. Do you know what the Ninja Rap is?
Vanilla Ice's song from the second live action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, which I did see in the theaters, as the movies were better than the cartoon, but nowhere near as good as the original black and white comics.
40. Do you know why people cringe when they hear the word BUCKNER?
It took me a moment, but then again, I'm from NY, and therefore giggle with glee over Buckner's legendary misstep against the Mets in '86. (g)
41. Can you name the family members from the National Lampoon's Vacation movies?
Clark Griswold is the dad, but that's it.
42. Did you have pump sneakers?
Yup - multiple pairs, I think.
43. Did you own HYPER COLOR shirts?
Surprisingly, no.
44. Did you watch Smurfs?
Oh, lord, yes, and even had some - I found a Smurf plushie at my grandmother's as well.
Then, one stolen originally from
medie:
1. How about a brief introduction?
I'm Jenn aka Mindwarp aka Jenncat aka Jennwarp aka The Mired Cockroach (old, old nick from my Due South smut days - we were all down in the sewers on the DSX list (g)), and I'm a fandom lurker, mostly of anime fandoms nowadays.
2. What got you into fanfiction?
I was surfing for some DS9 stuff (pre-Worf, when I loved the show), and stumbled across some Bashir/Garak fic. This led to my slash love. However, that being said, I actually wrote fic back in HS before I knew of such things, as I wrote a Blake's 7 sequel in proper epic format for a creative writing project my senior year, after we read Beowulf. I got full marks for it. (g)
3. What kind of fanfiction do you write?
Slash/yaoi, gen, crossovers, AU, introspective character pieces.
4. Do you write for the same pairings/characters?
It depends. I more bounce from fandom to fandom, although lately I've been consistent in what fandoms - and writing most characters from it.
5. What is your most popular fic and why do you think people like it so?
I don't know - I lurk, mostly, so when I do post fic, I don't seem to get much reaction. That's okay, though. My Bleach/Heroes series got good reactions, as it was an unexpected crossover that I made logically work. My older Yu Yu Hakusho and Yu-Gi-Oh! fics got good reactions as well, for being good character studies. I don't remember how well my ancient fic played, though.
6. Forget other people; what is the fanfic/post/prompt you've written that you're most proud of?
I'll actually say my YGO! fic, as I wrote it in response to something that came up back when I was in therapy, so it was as much about me as it was about Malik - but it still made sense for the character, as well, which people really liked.
7. Do you find writing easy? Hard? What aspects do you struggle with?
Hard as hell - I never get started, and if I stop for some reason, I can't restart. I think that's why short fics work better for me - once I start, I write for a few hours, and I'm good.
8. Write a few sentences of your favorite pairing or character.
I saved this one for the last, since it's the hardest for me! I haven't written InuKai yet! Here's a shot, based on one of my favorite crack anime episodes (163, Kaidou's Unknown World):
Inui watched the water droplets fly off his kohai's body as Kaidou pulled a wet towel again and again a few feet in from the shore of the wide river, practicing his Boomerang Snake swing. His mind was in turmoil. Kaidou's mind had forgotten all of this - their special training, their partnership, even who Inui was. Thankfully, Kaidou's body had remembered what his mind had forgotten, and the match against Momoshiro and Echizen had helped trigger the memories. Kaidou seemed fine now, but what if he wasn't? How could Inui test to see if anything was still missing? Should he even do so? If he got caught, how would Kaidou react? Normally, he could completely predict his kohai, but now he was unsure if his data was still correct.
"Sempai, you think too much."
Inui jerked out of his reverie at the sound of Kaidou's rough voice. The shirtless, dripping wet teen knelt before the older boy, and slowly removed his thick glasses. Gently, tenderly, Kaidou kissed Inui.
"Don't worry, I'm fine."
Yay! I did it! That felt like a good end spot, for this. (BTW, for anyone who doesn't know, sempai = upperclassman or senior, while kohai = underclassman or junior.)
10. Are you guilty of any of the trends you hate?
I think the only trend I hate is Mary Sueing. I had written a self-insert back in my wrestling fandom days, but that was also a pure PWP (and labeled as such), so there wasn't enough development period that I would really count it.
11. What was the first fandom you wrote for? Do you still write for it?
Well, really Blake's 7, which I never wrote for again. I wasn't involved really in fandom then, though. In fandom, it's a tie between Due South and Animaniacs, as I was doing both at the same time, but I'm out of both of those now.
12. Name your OTPs and explain what it is about them you love to write.
I actually never really wrote any of my OTPs, I think, except Kurama/Hiei (YYH) once, but that was more of a Kurama character study. That I wrote for a challenge (that I made actually), and it was tough, since Kurama is a hard character to properly do. He's a thousands years old fox demon in a human body, so his mindset is interesting. Meanwhile, Hiei is a snarky bastard, usually, but he's also deep. It makes things interesting. I can say what my current ones are, though:
1. Jiraiya/Tsunade (Naruto) - a rare pairing (and a het one!), probably because both are in their 50's. Still, I love both characters, and there's something about a mature pairing.
2. Hiro/Ando (Heroes) - because their love is so true, whether you think it's a friendship love or love love.
3. Shunsui/Ukitake (Bleach) - because they are so married, even if Shunsui loves the ladies. Again, see Hiro/Ando, but make the characters millenia old, and see how the friendship is.
4. Yoruichi/Urahara (Bleach) - they understand each other so well, which is a feat considering the plotting both can do (usually together, though). She left Soul Society when he was banished - that says something.
5. Inui/Kaidou (Prince of Tennis) - My current top OTP. Again, BECAUSE THEY ARE SO MARRIED, I MUST ABUSE CAPSLOCK. The only pairs more practically married in TeniPuri are the Golden Pair (the matching rings in Band of Princes clinch this) and (canonically!) Shitenhouji's Koharu/Yuuji pair (although Koharu is canonically stalking Fudomine's Kamio (slightly) and Kaidou, and even hit on Kaidou). C'mon, they're regular doubles partners, which in TeniPuri's version of being subtle and obvious at the same time, means they are together (seriously - at least in the anime, anyway, which is the gayest non-shounen-ai series EVER. The manga isn't as gay, except for Koharu, of course). They even have the infamous Green Towel of Love - trust me, when you see THAT moment, you just know.
And, just for crack... 6. Kaiba Seto/Blue Eyes White Dragon - because when a teenager even has a personal jet modeled after his favorite Duel Monster, he has a fetish. Then again, considering that he's the reincarnation of High Priest Set, who loved Kisara, who's Ka monster was the BEWD... anyway, it's crack.
13. What would you call your writing style?
I don't know. It depends on the story. I do write plot-driven stuff differently than character studies. (shrugs)
14. Do you read other people's writing? If so, what do you find yourself reading the most?
(snorts) Since I don't write much, of course I read others' work. I read slash and gen the most, but that's because het in some fandoms scarred me (boyband Mary Sues... (shudders)). I do read het sometimes, though. As for the stories themselves - depends on the pairing and if the summary sounds interesting, or if I'm already familiar with the author's work and know it'll be good.
15. Name one thing you'd love to write but have been too afraid or too shy to do.
I don't know. I've written straight and gay smut, so that's not a problem. (
dragonsinger, please write smut! I'd read it!) I don't think there's a genre that scares me, per se.
16. Do you feel uncomfortable taking criticism? Or worse, do you have the dreaded bloated ego?
I do, but that's because I'm just paranoid. It doesn't matter the venue - you should see me before my annual evaluation at work, and I already know going in how that will be! I do want constructive criticism, though, so that I can improve.
17. When you write, is there anything that helps?
No distractions - if I stop, I'm screwed.
18. What inspires you?
Random thoughts that flit in my head. Seriously. My brain is weird, though.
19. Lastly, how would you sum up your fanfiction experiences and you as a writer?
Scattershot - I like doing it, but I'm not consistent. Don't count on me for stuff, but when I do it, hopefully it's good - people say so, anyway.
