It's still slow going, but I'm chipping away at it.
Their three bento were devoured in short order with Rin finishing fast enough to have time to climb three more trees before Shiro and Yukio were done. But, soon enough, Shiro had eaten the last bits of his own rice and couldn’t put off what needed to be done any longer.
He stood, brushing dirt off his cassock. “Rin, could you come over here?”
“Eh?” Rin ambled over curiously.
And, Shiro mentally reached out to the thin threads of the seal he’d worked the night Rin became whole. It was frayed and failing already. Searing away in the face of the pure power of Rin’s flames and held only by stubborn determination and prayer.
It wasn’t one of his usual bindings or exorcisms. Those had no effect on Rin. Not now. And, not all those years ago when he’d last been whole.
That alone had quieted his doubts then. He wished he thought it would appease the Grigori. But, they were demons too in the end. To think that Rin belonged in Assiah, that his power was accepted… They would argue about the dangers of Satan’s power and the chance Rin could host him, but, in the end, it would be raw jealousy that condemned his son.
Never. They would have to go through him first.
Wordlessly, Shiro let go of the last, thin connection, and the seal released. And, with it, the creeping drain of the last few days.
Immediately, flames burst free. Rin’s eyes widened.
And, the ground opened beneath them.
Heh, right on cue.
Giving Rin a hard shove toward Yukio, Shiro began shouting an Aria.
“I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock...”
