Thursday, August 2th, was day 4 of my internship, and my first day really working alone. Frank had a lot of clients coming in to see him, and while I don't think he intended to have me on my own, I think it was a good experience (although I screwed up, lol). When I met up with him, he had just gotten some food from one of the many restaurants in the area (it looked and smelled delicious), and told me he really needed to eat. We went down to the break room, and as he ate his food, he had me look at one of Cadice Olson's design books to get a feel for how to draw. While I've taken manual drafting, I must admit that Olson's drawing skills are far superior to anything we ever really learned to do, especially when you factor in the fact that she adds color to her floor plans. Perhaps i'll end up doing that in my rendering class this upcoming semester... who know. Anyway, we planned on heading to staples to get appropiate paper for the upcoming task, which was to draw of floor plan of Gilda and Eunice's house. Frank got a client call, and told me to head up to the cubicle and start outlining the room. I did as he said...
Several hours pass, and he's still not back, so I just struggle on with the process, greatly screwing up along the way. It wasn't so much that I didn't know what I was doing, it's just that I didn't have the proper resources to work with. Alsom there were some things I wish he would have told me before I started to prevent me from messing up so much, but it was all a learning experience. He'd come back to check on me from time to time, and when he did so, he'd always say that what I had looked great. When he finally sat down and REALLY looked at what I drew, he was able to point out the mistakes (too bad he didn't have time to check earlier). By the end of the day, we both agreed that it would just be better for me to start over again Friday, which didn't really mind because I knew that the process would go much faster, I'd have more space to work in, and I'd have paper to draw on that was the appropiate size (the paper I drew on originally was 2 pieces of paper from a writing pad that I stapled together because we never got to go to the store). I worked from 1:00 - 5:30.
Friday rolled around and I was ready to tackle the floor plane. Frank cleared his drafting table off for me, got me some graph paper, and gave me some much needed pointers, and I was set. I was able to knock-out the floor plan for the first floor, and start on the plan for the 2nd one! Frank said that they were MUCH more impressive than what had the day before, but I'm not 100% sure if my floor plan for the 2nd floor was drawn right. I told him this, and he said he'll take a look at it next week. There were some dimensions missing on the rough sketch that were kind of important for that second floor plan, but I'm sure he'll find some kind of way to make it work. After totally screwing up Thursday (he says Thursday wasn't a waste of time, I guess I agree), the only real concern he had was my lettering, and I have to say, it concerns me too. I never realized how bad it was until Thursday, but it didn't help that I hadn't eaten a real meal all day and that I was trying to come down with something. I think that's something we're going to really be working on in the next few weeks. With a profession like this, EVERYTHING needs to look amazing, especially when the drawing itself looks well done and professional. Friday I worked from 12:45 - 6:00 (there was a client that just kept running off at the mouth, but she was adorably sweet, and told me she spent more on pillows than she did on her entire bedroom set 32 years ago). With school starting this week, I won't be back at the store until Thursday. My schedule will now officially be Thursdays and Fridays from 1-5:30, although it's looking like I'll be there on some Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays for presentations. I don't mind that at all because it means i'll have my hours much quicker.
Working with Frank has been great. The only thing I can honestly say I don't really like is the fact that he isn't very supportive of the idea of me getting another degree (I'm planning on applying to UMBC for Film... although I told him web design which I felt would be able to compliment interior design nicely). He says that if I pursue another degree, interior design will forever be on the back burner. I understand what he means, but I think having a baccelor's degree in SOMETHNG would be very beneficial to me. Who knows...
